@live address questions answered

Jacky Mok, another Product Manager for Windows Live in Toronto, has posted some information on the upcoming @live addresses, which he says will be available “in the fall”, along with “a rich family of products” around the same time.

According to the blog entry on livechronicles.spaces.live.com, there will be no migration of address names from current hotmail addresses, so if you have liveside@hotmail.com, there’s no guarantee you will get liveside@live.ca.  It’s on a first come, first served basis.  Apparently country code addresses will only be available in countries outside the US (I’m assuming a bit here, as Jacky talks only about .ca, Canadian addresses), so that a Canadian will be able to get an @live.ca address, but not an @live.com one.

Some limited migration will be available, for contacts.  Other information will stay with your current accounts:

“such as: Windows Live Spaces contents (photos, blogs, etc), your emails, subscription status (hotmail plus or premium), association with other products (Favourites, OneCare, etc).”

New @hotmail.com addresses will still be available, as they are now.

    I hope we’ll be able to get @live.co.uk emails and all emails sent to the hotmail one are forwarded to the live one!

    Yes! They’re finally here (maybe). It’s taken so long, but hopefully the fall goodies will be great. @live.com sound better than the other e-mail address, especially @hotmail.com.

    Good to finally have some official information on the @live.x issue but MAJOR disappointment on the lack of migration. I registered my @live.com address a while ago but haven’t started using it yet in the hope that I would be able to migrate most of my stuff (e.g. my WLSpace) over, now I see that only contacts are going to be able to be transferred – something that I could have done myself very easily when I first registered the address.

    The inability to transfer data is a big mistake and major flaw in trying to promote Windows Live, both because people won’t like loss of data (and will associate this failing with the Windows Live brand) and because people won’t sign up for new @live addresses (which would help promote Windows Live to their contacts) as they won’t want to loose everything.

    So many people have been waiting to get these addresses for so long and if they find out now that they can’t transfer data they will be very disappointed and this will be a(nother) major weakness of Windows Live.

    Talk about communication, transparency and keeping people informed – you might find it very interesting that, contrary to what I’ve read in your post, some countries seem to have already started the rollout of @live.+ addresses – I’ve joined livesid with my one week old ‘live.nl’ address which MS in the Netherlands does readily hand out.

    Interested in getting one? I fix u up with Microsoft NL :-)

    desaster-area: yes, the @live.nl domain has been available for almost a year now. the rest of the domains are not yet available though :(
