Windows Live Photo Gallery beta updated (ing)

Reports are coming in about an update coming through Windows Updates for the Windows Live Photo Gallery, updating to Beta 2.  I’m not seeing it as yet (Update: I had to “check for updates”, as OneCare won’t let me have “notify but don’t install” checked – new version is installed now, thanks Scott!), but there is a Knowledge Base article.  A couple of interesting tidbits from the KB:

  • Windows Desktop Search is not required for installation.
  • Windows Live Photo Gallery will no longer replace entry points or any icons for the Windows Photo Gallery that is included with Windows Vista

The new build number is Version 2008 – Build 12.0.1299.1010, and included are improvements to the types of files WLPG will open:

WLPGfiles

(Thanks Rich!)

Microsoft Update even prompted my Danish language version of Live Photo Gallery on a XP Pro-system to update.

When starting the app after installation the Gallery required a new installation of MS SQL 2005 Compact Ed., and I was directed to the download. After this addition, the app started with no problem. (Exept perhaps, that it takes up 170 MB of RAM when running).

I was sorry to see, that there is still no support for IPTC meta-data. MS released a small extension for Explorer called Photo Info, that allows users to tag pictures using the IPTC-standard, which is great. It would be nice to know the future for this standard in the Windows Live world. The available tagging and commenting tools in Live Gallery seem sub standard and close to useless.
