Signup is still somewhat buggy as it is being rolled out so just bear with it.

Regarding the transition from @hotmail.com to @live.com, a pretty straightforward process is given on the new Windows Live site at http://www.windowslive.com/freshstart. Although you can automatically migrate your Hotmail inbox using TrueSwitch, anything else tied to your Live ID such as your contacts, Space, Xbox Live Gamercard etc cannot be automatically moved across due to legal and privacy issues. You can manually move across your contacts by exporting and importing into Windows Live Messenger, but unfortunately that’s it. There’s some useful tips if you do want to migrate though.

  • AndyD

Aww.. I lost my gratuitouse comments on the old post. :-p

  • Chris

Yup sorry guys, feel free to rant in here instead!

Cleitondj – thanks for that :)

  • york

    australia is open.
    how exciting!

  • Chris

Signup is still a bit buggy at the moment so be patient :)

  • cleitondj

THIS IS A HACK METHOD OR OFFICIAL RELEASE?

    very strange!! :(

We are working to fix a temporary problem with our sign-up service.
    Please try again.
    Error code: 32

  • WyzyrdMyrrlyn

    HALLELUJAH!

I cant wait until this is full—only 23 more minutes from posting time

    (dancing a jig)

  • Chris

Cleitondj this is the official release, just a last minute bug is giving the error you’re seeing. It’s being worked on.

  • BV2312

you can also edit the url so that if live in the UK but still want LIVE.com just change the url from en-gb to en-us etc

  • Matthew

Be sure to check out http://www.windowslive.com/freshstart.html for additional information.

    @Matthew

  • morfit

site was down again. then when it was back up it appear to have taken out the “@live” domain from the pick list…and all that remains now is “@hotmail” to sign up for….strange indeed!

BTW…anyone know if you can magically make your hotmail domain into a live domain without having to do all the nasty switching and linking of ID’s….does not appear to be an option from what I can tell….fresh start or nothing….pity.

  • Chris

morfit – just added some discussion on that in the post above. Matthew gave a great url too, unfortunately you’ll have to manually migrate from @hotmail.com to @live.com but emails/contacts are pretty straightforward.

  • cleitondj

    LOL

back to hotmail.com again! crazy things from windowslive team!
    :P

  • quikboy

    Yay!

I was happy to discover the account I wanted was still available.

    Happy day!

  • morfit

Thanks Chris…sorry…yeah…I hadnt seen the bottom of your post. I guess I just wish they could have made it like “would you like to CONVERT your @hotmail to @live if xxxxx@live.com is available?”…instead of having to create a whole new ID…last thing I need is another ID to keep track of :) Wasn’t quite what I was expecting…but glad they are opening it up.

  • Espiox

It’d be nice if the Xbox/Zune teams opened up a way of manually migrating their data to new accounts.

  • quikboy

    I have a question!

Using TrueSwitch, when I migrate my old @hotmail.com stuff over to @live.com, will “everything” migrate?

Including my contacts, Live Spaces blog entries, QnA and MS Points, all of it?

I don’t want to start off a new slate, I already built up a lot on the old one, and would hate to start over again. So will ALL my things migrate?

  • Espiox

    @quikboy

As far as I know, it’s only contacts, mail, and calendar data. Things like Points, Xbox Live, etc. can’t be transferred for security/privacy reasons.

  • ScottIsAFool

quikboy, comments on http://livechronicles.spaces.live.com/blog/cns!31AFDCD75FEE9899!498.entry#comment suggest that no, it will not.

  • Chris

To confirm, there is no automatic migration at this time due to data privacy and legal issues.

  • wutan

Am i the only one that is getting an error message when trying to get @live.com address, all i can seem to get is @live.co.uk. Also how do i get other domains like @live.it or @windowslive. Thanks

  • Espiox

Can somebody just post a comment here when they’ve fixed the signup issues. I’ve filled in this form about 10 times now only to be hit with an error.

  • tophtucker

I’m sort of surprised how many people want to migrate. @hotmail.com is a classic; I’ll get a new live.com one, but I’m not giving up my Hotmail one! :)

Although I guess @live.com is pretty cool just because it’s so short & generic (that is to say, it must have been a pretty expensive domain).

  • morfit

Espiox – I second that. I’m going on my 10th or so time…obviously more than temporary

  • TheVMaster

Great! I claimed my @live.IT address.

On this website you can find direct links to almost all of the @LIVE.* addresses : http://blog.hznet.nl/index.php/2007/11/06/update-livecom-registration-is-opened-other-live-too

  • cattrang

I think there is a problem with the sign up!
Just can’t register for my account

  • TheVMaster

Not even through the direct-link on the blog I gave? Did you logout of your other/current Windows Live ID?

  • 88michael

Grghh! I missed out on getting michael@live.com.au. I’m really angry!

  • CyberScriber

@michael : That would have gone 1 year ago

  • juventusc

hey, can someone please help me get a @live.com.jp account please

  • bf1977

Because it does not have for Brazil?

In the countries that have the Windowslive.com domain is because Live.com already has owner?

  • Mephiles

Great! I might be getting a new email.

  • DeathSeeker

Thanks for the link TheVMaster , finaly got my @windowslive account. Sweetness.

  • CoolMe

The UK one aint working, the @ live.co.uk has vanished!
