Windows Live sign in problems

Windows Live seems to be experiencing wide ranging issues this evening (GMT –8 here), including problems signing in to Messenger, Zune Marketplace, and especially Hotmail.  In trying to sign in to one Hotmail account here, a strange message appears instead:

noinbox

Currently there are multiple reports of the problems on Twitter (a real time search link), including some reports from @Microsoft_cares (who is not a Microsoft employee, by the way), and a number of LiveSide readers are reporting issues as well.

If you are currently experiencing problems, it’s not just you.  We’ll try to find out what’s going on and update as soon as we hear anything.

This is a problem, but it seems to only be affecting browser applications, as I have successfully sent an email via the Windows Live Mail application, and can still use Windows Live Messenger.

Hotmail and other services seem to be backup… the second I started searching twitter for Hotmail reports of the service being back on started coming up.

The problem is related to the cutting of AT&T fiber-optic cables in Santa Clara County Thursday. A senior Microsoft engineer in Mountain View says they are working to restore service. Don’t panic– your inbox and stored messages have not been permanently deleted.
