The BBC Goes Big On Bing Maps

BBC The BBC (British Broadcasting Corporation) sure loves Bing Maps. They didn’t publish one, not two, not three but eleven Bing map applications so far!

There’s allsorts varying from an overview of the Berkshire Floods to an Irish Language Map and a request to save the sounds of the World. Sports lovers are served very well too, no matter if you love Tennis, Rugby or Running. Film lovers scoot on over to the Cannes 2009 Map and if politics is your thing, well there’s some of that too.

A full list of all the applications, and a description of each, can be found on the Bing Maps Blog.

Whilst its a nice implementation, I never understand why MS lets companies customise the UI. In this iteration there is no Birds Eye view (arguably THE USP of Bing Maps), plus the buttons are custom skinned and on the opposite side to Bing Maps.

This creates brand inconsistency. On the upside I am sure MS are focusing on licensing their maps to get revenue (assuming they are not free).

But, did you know that no one used maps.bing in the UK. Really no one, because it is not available!

Why? Because the Bing (ex-live) and MSN sites redirect you to http://www.multimap.com when you click on map.

    Try it:
    http://maps.bing.co.uk/
    http://uk.msn.com/

And FYI, advertising on Multimap goes through doubleclick (google)…

I don’t know why. The only positive side of multimap is the quality of the maps.

AGAIN, MAPS.BING.CO.UK DON’T EXIST, AREN’T AVAILABLE IN THE UK!

@lbastie: Interesting points, but it looks like MultiMap is in fact powered by Bing. Microsoft purchased the company (Multimap) back in 2007. As for their ad system, I wouldn’t doubt if they’ve moved on to other solutions by now.
