Adding Photos To Hotmail Messages – A Temporary Change

Have you noticed that you can no longer add photos directly into the body of a Windows Live Hotmail message the way you used to? It’s been temporarily removed, here’s why:

During a recent review, we identified an incompatibility with Internet Explorer that caused a security flaw with photo uploads, and we made the decision to temporarily remove the feature. The Hotmail team takes security very seriously and we expect to bring back the photo upload feature by the end of September. In the meantime, you can still add pictures as attachments to your Hotmail messages, by clicking Attach, and then File, and then selecting the picture you want to include.

We apologize for any inconvenience that this may cause you until this fix is complete.

    I think its good Microsoft addresses the problem. Just makes me wonder about one thing (and I am speculating here):
    Isnt windows Live Wave 4 suppose to come out around the same time? Hence Microsoft address the problem in the Wave 4 version, but not anymore in Wave 3?

    I know its speculating, but the timing seems too much of a coincidence to me…..

    On a side note, has anyone else noticed that general lack of wave 4 information? Last year, LiveSide was all over wave 3 while it was still cooking, but this time around, I’ve heard very little from anyone about what to expect or when to expect it. Is Microsoft just being intentionally closed-lipped, or is wave 4 still a long way off?

    Delivery timeline will depend on what is targetted for Wave 4 and how/if they do public testing. Generally, I think we’ll see enhancements across the board. I see the big ticket items as being Live Mesh, Live Messenger and maybe Live SkyDrive (video streaming).

    Why Live Messenger…because I think Microsoft is mindful of Skype and Google Voice. They are going to need to enhance VOIP capabilities in WLM. They really should add user configurable SIP support to Live Call or at least open up Live Call to developers who want to add SIP support.

    Why Live SkyDrive…because I don’t believe the shutdown of SoapBox is the end of story. There is no way that Microsoft will not offer some video streaming capabilities via Windows Live.

    @paperlock, I don’t have any information…its just generally how I see things.

    I’m not sure SkyDrive absolutely needs dedicated folders for videos/podcasts. Although I imagine you can create as many folders as you want to partition your content types.

    The Social Desktop – MS Research project is interesting..I’ve been watching that.

    @JohnCz: Re: Soapbox and Windows Live. I certainly hope so too. Do remember that Microsoft currently do have Windows Live Video Messages for video “sharing” (although not with public of course) – so it’d be interesting to see how that might turn out.
