Windows Live, the #2 social networking site?

An article in today’s Economist, “A world of connections”, is a fairly standard recap of the popularity of social networking sites such as Facebook and Twitter, with a bit of context from the World Economic Forum in Davos thrown in to make it a bit more topical.

However one of the graphics used in the piece jumped out for at least one Twitter user, where we caught it (in our Tweets! section, try it out!).  comScore has included Windows Live in its social networking lists, and look where it ranks:

Obviously Facebook is well ahead of the pack, but Windows Live ranks above MySpace and Twitter, and a number of other social networking sites.  With all the recent Wave 4 news we’ve been bringing you that seems to indicate that Windows Live will become even more oriented towards social networking, it’s good to see where Windows Live ranks now.

I guess all that hard work really did pay off

I think they’re counting Windows Live Messenger numbers. I seriously doubt most Messenger users actually use the Windows Live social networking Web site features like Profile.

We requested some clarification from comScore and will follow up if they respond, but agreed that counting Messenger users isn’t quite the same as engagement on Facebook – still it does point out that Windows Live has some very large potential clout. Let’s see what they do with it.

Thank’s for the clarification. My personal impression is that the social networking side of Windows Live is essentially dead. There seem to be so very few people there and the few I know are almost totally inactive. Like it or not, Facebook has the critical mass.

We continue to get a steady trickle of “friends requests” on Windows Live, although agreed that there’s very very little interaction.

Surprising Twitter is number 5 bur I guess that’s because it’s over rated

Has anyone noticed that Windows Live updates for your profile have not been working. When you do something on Facebook,Youtube, or a couple of other sites, it doesn’t show in the updates for your profile anymore. Also when you update your profile message for the day, it does not sync well with Windows Live Messenger. Windows Live Social Network would be better if they fixed it.

They probably should not have killed auxilliary services like QnA, Expo etc. I remember that QnA was rapidly growing as a community and its death saw a massive migration to Facebook. They should have built upon such services which made being at Windows Live a lot of fun. Today, Windows Live is plain boring and has nothing compelling to offer except for Hotmail, Messenger, Photos and the desktop applications.

Are you suggesting that Facebook is popular because Microsoft closed QnA?

Do you have any numbers signifying that it was “rapidly growing as a community”? The reason I ask is that if that were true I’d be surprised that they closed it.
