So what IS the deal with Windows Live for Macs?

Last week, as Microsoft began to open up a bit about Windows Live Wave 4, Corporate Vice President Chris Jones offered up an interesting list of Wave 4 clients:

We will then roll out updates to our web services, followed by betas of our software for Windows PCs, Macs, and phones.

Michael Gillett (Gilly2468 to LiveSide readers) over at My Microsoft Life picked up on the Mac mention, and noted more from another LiveSide reader Lituus, who tweeted:

WLE for Mac to bring Messenger & Sync, along with Skydrive plug-ins for iMovie & iPhoto? Writer remains exclusive to PCs.

Interesting speculation, indeed.  There’s already a Messenger for Mac, and Live Mesh for Mac, so this could be not much more than a re-packaging to bring them in line with the rest of Windows Live, or could it be more than that?  Could we see Windows Live on Macs, on iPhones, or even (gasp) on iPads?

Just one more thing to wait for, hopefully we’ll be getting more answers and fewer questions soon.

Yes, its interesting to guess the idea behind this news but they must not let Live Writer go to Mac owners! Why? Because all the other elements of the Windows Live Essentials package have equivalent programs and/or alternatives. However, there is no alternative to Live Writer. It’s unique and is the one program that a lot of Mac owners envy PC owners for.
I certainly wouldn’t ever consider making it available to Mac owners. Would you?

It would actually be very beneficial for MS to have a Mac writer version. All you have to do is to simply keep the Mac app “one version behind” the windows app.

      Three things happen:
      1. The product (although one version behind) is still one of the most powerful applications for blog writing. So it’s still very much useful.
      2. The Mac user who’s used to always getting the latest and greatest (sometimes by standing in a long (!!) queue for hours) starts to see the value of Windows platform (and the shortcomings of staying with Mac software)… (although their hardware is friggin’ awesome!!)
      3. Alternative products (paid or to a lesser extent… free) with similar functionality for Mac get heavily disincentivized with possibility of MS getting significant control over this product area on Mac. (Especially since Mac is all about consumer-focused apps. So this app is pretty critical.)

You see, MS really doesn’t need writer as a differentiating point on Windows nor will Mac stay without a writer-like app for very long. So it makes sense for MS to fill the gap* (version-1) and let those guys know that “you can run from Windows… but you can’t hide” :) … assuming doing so is not too much work.

One might have some ethical qualms, but MS gets regularly bashed for doing the ‘right’ thing (openly disclosing vulnerabilities is one of the primary reasons for bad name for MS in recent years despite having most advanced security features across OSes… and vulnerabilities? You just need one, and they all have that!)… at the end of the day, I just ask, is it perfectly legal? And proceed… (to either attempt to fix or “follow” the law.)

      Windows 7: 120$
      Snow Leopard: 29$
Control over competitor’s user experience (while pushing Live ID and Windows Live Spaces): Priceless!!

Messenger and Mesh for Mac make sense, but they’d better not make Live Writer, Photo Gallery, and Movie Maker for Mac. Macs have iLive; Windows Live Essentials needs to be that for PCs (and needs to be even more awesome :) )

live mail for the mac would be awesome. i still don’t have a decent e-mail program that handles my hotmail accounts

Use the standard built in Mac Mail. Works fine with Hotmail.

F**king ridiculous. WinXP with its gigantic market share doesn’t get the latest version of Messenger and Sync but Mac users get it?

I’m pretty sure it won’t run on a 9 year old Mac OS either.

If they get Messenger for Mac 8 then its worse than Messenger 2009 for Windows so you don’t have to worry about it :P

Apple would have been dead long ago if it weren’t for MS continuing to publish Office for Mac. Even now, while representing less than 10% of the market, Mac users feel entitled and complain when publishers aren’t willing to waste development cycles on such a small group.

Doesn’t really align with the “extension of Windows” ideology that they have attached to Windows Live since the beginning. I see Messenger and Sync as viable products to update on Macs, but to release them as an “Essentials” package would be misleading if none of the major software is included. However, “Essentials for PC” and “Essentials for Mac” do make for clearer branding…
