Outlook Connector v. 14.0 released

microsoft-office2010 The latest version of the Outlook Connector, which makes it easy (possible) to manage your Hotmail e-mail, calendar, and contacts from within Outlook, is now available for download.  A couple of blog posts have announced the new Connector today (May 4), although the publish date on the download is April 20.  Aside from performance and reliability upgrades, the new version of the Outlook Connector offers some additional functionality if you’re using Office 2010 (which is out in RTM to MSDN and Tech-Net subscribers, and is set for a May 12 launch).  These improvements are also available to Office 2010 beta users, so no reason to wait:

  • Junk filter settings. Your safe sender, blocked sender, and safe recipient lists are synchronized between Outlook and Hotmail.
  • Integrated Send/Receive. Send/receive works just as it does for your other Outlook accounts.
  • Integrated connection status. The Hotmail account status appears in the Outlook status bar.
  • Rule support for secondary accounts. Rules can be applied to your Hotmail account in Outlook, even if it is not your primary Outlook account.
  • Sync your drafts. The Outlook Drafts folder synchronizes with the Hotmail Drafts folder
  • Due to some issues with auto upgrading from Outlook Connector 12.1, you will need to go get the latest version.  Here’s the links:

Good to know I wasn’t alone with the buggy upgrading process…but overall I am very happy with the improved Connector.

What about the Social Connector RTM for Facebook, Twitter, MySpace, Windows Live and LinkedIn? There was also supposed to be a Social Connector SDK.

I don’t like these connector or syncing tools. The point is that i need to install someting to use (in this case) a mailservice. the client (Outlook) supports many mailprotocols so why is Hotmail not support a protocol like IMAP? Then it will works all out of the box. In all email clients. It smells like monopoly. But i have seen that Windows Live is going to support Exchange ActiveSync, so that will be better.

You can use POP/SMTP with Hotmail if you don’t like the connector. The fact that they need a connector is because it’s not just the emails on Hotmail that you are synching. There’s also contacts and calendar that gets sync’ed You can’t do that with IMAP.

I’ve found the connector to be buggy – makes Outlook 2010 totally unusuable due to the frequent crashes. The prior connector with Outlook 2007 was quite stable. Install with caution.

Why did they bother with this with Activesync support around the corner?
