At SMX Advanced in Seattle this morning, Microsoft Senior Vice President Yusuf Mehdi demoed a new “social” vertical coming to Bing, set to go live “within the hour”. The new page features real time results from Twitter and Facebook, filtered in a number of ways. Mehdi demonstrated Social by pulling up info on new Major League Baseball phenom Steven Strasburg, who made big news in his Washington Nationals debut last night.
Mehdi, in a “fireside chat” with Search Engine Land’s Danny Sullivan, talked about the Yahoo merger, what has worked and what hasn’t in marketing Bing in its first year, and even showed off an assessment of how well Bing is doing as conducted by his 8 year old daughter:
…a little hard to see in this picture, but on the left is the list of her friends who use Bing, and on the right, the ones who use “the other guy”. “Daddy, we’ve got a lot of work to do” Mehdi quoted his daughter as saying, which brought a laugh from the audience.
Mehdi said that Bing would be rolling out its Spring set of revisions “soon”, and that Bing has added 20 million new users and is doing well, although “we’ve got miles to go”
We took a short video of Mehdi’s Social demo and will have it up as soon as possible. You can check out more on Bing Social on the Bing Blog.
Todd Bishop at TechFlash has a video up of the demo, you can check it out on his post.
