Bing announces new Social vertical

At SMX Advanced in Seattle this morning, Microsoft Senior Vice President Yusuf Mehdi demoed a new “social” vertical coming to Bing, set to go live “within the hour”.  The new page features real time results from Twitter and Facebook, filtered in a number of ways.  Mehdi demonstrated Social by pulling up info on new Major League Baseball phenom Steven Strasburg, who made big news in his Washington Nationals debut last night.

Mehdi, in a “fireside chat” with Search Engine Land’s Danny Sullivan, talked about the Yahoo merger, what has worked and what hasn’t in marketing Bing in its first year, and even showed off an assessment of how well Bing is doing as conducted by his 8 year old daughter:

…a little hard to see in this picture, but on the left is the list of her friends who use Bing, and on the right, the ones who use “the other guy”.  “Daddy, we’ve got a lot of work to do” Mehdi quoted his daughter as saying, which brought a laugh from the audience.

Mehdi said that Bing would be rolling out its Spring set of revisions “soon”, and that Bing has added 20 million new users and is doing well, although “we’ve got miles to go”

We took a short video of Mehdi’s Social demo and will have it up as soon as possible.  You can check out more on Bing Social on the Bing Blog.

Todd Bishop at TechFlash has a video up of the demo, you can check it out on his post.

Considering what Microsoft is doing with the new Hotmail and Office 2010 (even outlook), this is no surprise.

Interesting to see the acceptance that Microsoft can’t rule everything… and making it easier for people to stay connected. I like it…

EXTRA EXTRA EXTRA It just released the beta version of Windows Live Essentials 2011 on the web! The leak occurred through and LiveBetas Wikikou.

The version is “Build 15.3.2688.420″ and is expected to be official beta version, this will be released only between 16 and 21 June.

Unfortunately you can not log on to Messenger, it returns an authentication error “is not authorized.” We are waiting for a patch that I hope will come soon.

Thanks Victor, but we don’t supply links to unauthorized downloads on LiveSide, a long-standing policy. I edited out the links, thanks for not posting them again in the future :)
