Bing HTML5 preview to coincide with IE9 launch?

Back in September 2010, Microsoft revealed to the world the first beta of Internet Explorer 9, and along with it they demoed a version of Bing running HTML5-enabled code. While they promised that the HTML5-enabled version of Bing will be available to the public as a preview "within a month", we never saw any more news coming from Microsoft since then.

However, thanks to WinRumors.com, it appears that the HTML5-enabled version of Bing will be coming really soon, possibly coinciding with the Internet Explorer 9 release-to-web launch, rumoured to be around the MIX 11 timeframe. Along with this news, it seems like the Bing Preview Site also went live on http://www.bing.com/peek, showing the following:

Bing HTML5 Preview

Unfortunately, clicking on "Enter Bing Preview" doesn’t really bring you the HTML5 features yet. However, we’ll update you on LiveSide as soon as it goes live. In the mean time, if you haven’t already, you can check out the video of the demo of Bing HTML5 preview shown during the IE9 beta launch as well as during Apple’s WWDC 2010:

Interesting that it isn’t supported by Firefox

It isn’t? Where does it say that?

Yup, just tried this with Firefox 4– it won’t let you. Requires IE9, Chrome or Safari 5.

Perhaps it’s just a temporary thing where they aren’t detecting the beta. I assume they will support Fx 4 when it releases.

oh yeah, I forgot to update when I checked :P
Its odd, especially because firefox 4 supports more HTML5 than IE9… oh well, maybe there’s something specific, or they aren’t checking like you said

I don’t think Firefox support the H.264 standard. They decided to only support WebM.

Yeah, but Chrome just recently removed h.264 support, so then they wouldn’t be supported either.

[edit] well, actually, I’m pretty sure Microsoft has made an addon for chrome, but they’ve done one for Firefox too, so that’s not it

I would understand if they didn’t support versions below 4. However, if they really do release this without support for Fx 4, they’ll be hearing from quite a few people. They simply can’t afford to ignore Fx 4.

I can’t wait for the new Bing!

I don’t see anything new when I go to it.

@Garion – i’m sure it will work on Firefox when it launches

Looks like the search bar itself is about to get bigger, longer, and (better?). I think we have been waiting patiently for Bing HTML5 a little too long…I remember when I thought the preview was going to launch with the IE9 Beta 1 release (ha!) :p
