Microsoft hints built-in Windows Live Messenger support in Windows Phone “Mango”

We know that since the release of Windows Phone 7, many people have been asking for built-in Windows Live Messenger support, given that the “official” partner-built Messenger by Miyowa app had been lackluster is both features and integration with the People hub.

Well it seems like Microsoft has heard your voices. In a Windows Phone 7 developer communication newsletter sent out today, they have let slip of a few details which might hint that a built-in Windows Live Messenger app is in the works and coming as part of the “Mango” update:

[The Windows Phone 7 update] will bring support for real time communication and messaging and a broader connectivity to SkyDrive.

With additional APIs (such as sockets access) being made available in Windows Phone “Mango”, a proper built-in Windows Live Messenger app is definitely not surprising. In fact, we’ve even heard rumors before saying that Windows Phones will be getting video calling and Facebook chat support, let’s hope that these features will also be coming as part of this built-in Messenger app as well!

(Thanks to Neowin.net for the heads up)

If we can Messenger/Facebook chat from the peoples hub that would be huge. Though chat still needs to be in the facebook app as well and maybe an option to disable one for the other.

I would like to see Windows Live also connect to AIM, Yahoo, ICQ, etc. so it could replace Digsby on my desktop. Digsby is too good! =)

Facebook chat would make it a true killer.

I thought Windows Live Messenger already interoperates with Yahoo! Messenger contacts?

It does. They need to add File Transer and put Video support in the MMS/Email client so you can send videos via Email or MMS as well. They need to allow people to chat with Yahoo! Messenger and Facebook contacts in the integrated WLM client. That was something they didn’t add in Windows Mobile, and it made the WL4WM client useless.

If the integrated WLM client is worse than the iOS WLM client, I will truly give up on WP7 because Microsoft’s support for other platforms (notably iOS) over WP7 in some areas (namely their IM clients) does not make me more confident in the platform.
They need to add Universal Search to the OS, as well…

The WLM client needs to support file transfer as well. That is something Google ommited in the Android Google Talk Client, and it makes it as close to useless as ever.

And of course, Support for Groups.

        /shrug/

Otherwise, give us a toggle to turn it off so we can use a decent IM client like Trillian or something assuming they come to WP7.

I think this is true and heres why. if you go to the Windows Phone app in Facebook privacy settings (green icon) you can see it has permission to “Access Facebook Chat”. It also has “Check-ins” hinting that Places will be integrated too.
