Zune now not dead, situation officially bizarre

What is wrong with these people?  Yesterday, after a comedy of errors and false starts, a Zune.net notice went up announcing that “we will no longer be producing Zune players”. Finally, we thought (and blogged), this charade of “will there be another Zune?” was over.

But no.  As unbelievable as it may sound, today, the web page announcing the end of Zune players has been pulled, and @ZuneSupport chalks it up what it thinks “may have been an error”.  Here’s a screenshot of a Twitter thread between @ZuneSupport and @WP_DownUnder:

Of course, we saw the message posted to Zune.net yesterday, we copied and pasted the pertinent text directly from the site, and can verify it was up.  In fact @ZuneSupport seems to be trying to wish the announcement out of existence:

@ The Zune hardware is still being supported. There is no official info pertaining to discontinuing it. ^SM

but, of course, there was very decidedly and definitely “official info pertaining to discontinuing it”, we saw it with our own eyes (whether or not it was later pulled).  Does Microsoft really expect us to believe that someone took the time to craft the announcement, assuring users that their current devices would be supported but that Zune players were being discontinued, posted it, and it was all “an error”, and there aren’t plans to discontinue Zune players?

Just kill it already, guys.  Zune players have been dead for most of the year, we all know it.  It’s ok.  Take a deep breath and do the right thing.

Ironically, because I live in SA, and have never been able to get one, I would still have wanted one. I really liked the concept over the fang-dangled restrictive and flawed iPod and iTunes. Oh well, my WP will have to do. ;-)

I agree. I don’t want a MS phone with Zune integration. For example, if I am doing my lawn, you think I want to bring my expensive mobile phone out there while I’m doing that? Hardly. I don’t want to put my phone through an excessive wear and tear. Why can’t MS see this? They had a real winner in this device and they NEVER PROMOTED THE DAMNED THING!

This whole back and forth of “it’s dead”, “no it’s not” is just downright embarassing. It’s on life support until they clear out as much of their inventory as possible and then they kill it. Android will pick up the slack.

And therein lies the problem.  Microsoft doesn’t promote its products.  Television advertisements for Windows Live, Windows Phone, Xbox, and Zune need to be ubiquitous.

Zune’s not dead, it’s probably pining for the fjords…

But seriously, if they’re going to kill it they should just be forthcoming and do it. A bit of an oversimplification, but this fiasco reminds me of the mis-communication around HP “killing” WebOS and its PC business. The damage has already been done.

Really! It’s just as well anyway.  Zune is a rip.  I had a recent problem with them and just could not get anyone to correct it.  Zune has no customer service number or physical address, so how are paying consumers suppose to get assistance when it’s needed.  Zune should be DEAD!!!!
