A note on comments: Disqus 2012

disqus-logoFirst of all, we’d like to take this opportunity to thank each and every one of you for taking the time to comment on LiveSide.  We’ve tried to make it as easy as possible for you to do that, although it wasn’t always easy.  After a rash of comment spam found us spending more time deleting comments and rogue users than snooping for news, we switched to Disqus in late December of 2009, and we’ve been really happy with the service ever since then.

Well, as you may have noticed on some other blogs using Disqus, they’re starting to roll out their latest version, Disqus 2012, and today we turned it on here at LiveSide.

We’re still going to allow you to comment as a guest, or log in via Disqus, Twitter, or Facebook.  We really do want to make it as easy as possible for you to comment when you feel the urge, all while keeping this site safe and free of spam.  Disqus helps us do that, and we hope you like their latest version.

You can learn more about what Daniel Ha and his team have created with Disqus 2012 on their blog, and leave them (or us) feedback on what you like and don’t like about the new version.

In the meantime, thanks once again for joining in the conversation!

I don’t like Disqus or any service like it just because it slows down page loading way too much.

I haven’t noticed a problem. One must have a very slow Internet connection to be concerned about this, surely? Pages still appear to load almost instantly for me, on any Internet connection I’ve ever used, when visiting pages that use Disqus.

Same here, loads normal, not slower and I love the new layout :)

Even on my mobile with crappy 3G connection disqus loads fine

I don’t think that 16 MBit/s are slow. Nevertheless pages with there own comment system tend to load way faster than pages with either facebook comments or disqus.
Both without any additional page requests(ads or analytics)
May be it’s a location thing – don’t know where the server are located…

I am sympathetic, alterSchwede. But if choosing between Facebook comments and another system, I would prefer Disqus. Disqus allows you to participate, without being forced to open a Facebook account. I compared other comment systems for my blogs e.g. Intense Debate from WordPress, JS Kit, Halo (the latter two are being discontinued, I think). Disqus seemed like the best choice. I agree with you, that page load seems slower with Disqus on my own websites. But I don’t notice a difference on LiveSide.

LiveSide: I think you probably made a good decision, given a difficult situation. Spam IS abysmal to deal with, in large volume! Thank you.

I’ve had it where Disqus loaded slow but it never slowed down the rest of the page. I’d get the whole article at the top quickly but the comments would take a while to load which is no big deal.
