Facebook Chat on Windows Phone now supports offline messages

Facebook ChatEver since the release of Windows Phone 7.5 “Mango”, part of the new built-in Messaging experience is the integration of Facebook Chat which works seamlessly along with other instant messaging solutions like Messenger and SMS. However, one of the much requested missing feature is the ability to send offline Facebook Chat messages to contacts who are offline (or appearing offline) on Facebook.

According to reports from Spanish website Mi Movil Windows (via WMPU), it appears Microsoft and Facebook had flicked the switch on their back-end servers, and users are now able to send offline messages to contacts via Facebook Chat. Check out the video below showing this working on the Windows Phone:

The Messaging app will still notify you that the contact is currently offline, and recommends you to try SMS instead, but unlike the previous experience, the message will actually flow through to Facebook Chat and the contact will be able to check it when they next sign on to Facebook.

Are you able to send offline Facebook Chat messages on your Windows Phone? Let us know in the comments below!

Yes! As someone who has a limited messaging plan this is great news. Wife has an iPhone so I always have to dive into the Facebook app to start a conversation which is annoying. Worked great!

Handy! Now they just need to add this capability to Windows Live Messenger.

this works in messenger now too!

Doesn’t seem to be working here… the message box is read-only for offline Facebook contacts. Works fine in WP7 Messaging with the same contacts.

there is still a lot to do. I often miss facebook messages in the messages hub. For instance when the senders is offline or not chating from the facebook chat app but from the facebook message/mail app. Also messages that are sent while my phone signal doesn’t work well will never appear on my phone and the messages hub app doesn’t sync with the server to check for missed messages… We need a solution that garantee the messages will be received and that we’re not missing somes…

Super, now the WP7 FB integration just needs the ability to re-share, as well as the ability to “like” comments and pictures (seems like a huge oversight that I can’t do these things already). Then I’d hardly even need the official FB app anymore.

If only the whole messaging history would be synced to the hub as well, that would be nice, too. But anyway, great progress.
If WLM only offered the same functionality, when I’m online on my phone and on my PC I almost never get the messages delivered to my phone but only to my PC. PLUS a server-based messaging history as in FB chat would be good for WLM, too.

FINALLY! BTW, can anybody say, how much being online with the phone all the time has impact on either data usage and/or battery life?
