Exclusive: Even better screenshots of Metro-style Hotmail, or “Newmail”, leaked (now in English!)

By damaster | Posted June 8, 2012 218 comments

HotmailYesterday we gave you a sneak peek of the new Hotmail, featuring an entirely new interface that is said to be “fast, fluid, and intuitive”, and of course the design has been changed to the all new Metro-style, consistent with Microsoft’s other properties like Microsoft account and your Profile page. Well, today we have the full suite of high-resolution screenshots of the new Hotmail, or “Newmail” as they call it, available for you.

Newmail - Message

We understand that “Newmail” will be available on an opt-in basis (at least for the beginning), so users who prefers the old Hotmail experience can continue to use it for a while. For those who do choose to upgrade however, below are what’s new about the service, according to the introductory email for “Newmail” (and we think it might be there as a placeholder):

  • A modern interface: faster and cleaner
The simple, fluid and interactive design of Newmail makes it easy to use whether you’re on a desktop, phone or tablet.
  • Get a Newmail email address for your new inbox
You can get a new email address from Newmail. You don’t have to worry about your contacts and previous emails, you’ll keep them. And, you’ll continue receiving messages sent to your current email address.
  • Bring your inbox to life – Connect Facebook
Connect and chat across services like Facebook and Twitter. Keep your contacts information automatically in sync, and see what your friends are up to, right from Newmail.

So to take you through the entire “Newmail” experience, in English and watermark-free, check out our exclusive screenshot gallery below:

and when will we see this? So they’ll give you a..(name)@newmail.com address?

    • Jeff

You will never see this. Hotmail is NOT being rebranded as “Newmail”. This is a placeholder name. The screenshots above are not a final released product. Newmail is likely a development codename used to refer to the new interface.

      • johnshue

It’ll be something lame like MSAccountMail

Yes, I guess hotmail was better :)
They should focus more on adding features like gmail rather than changing names.

      • Imrakeshchandra

why u people are so dumb ?? newmail is not a rename. it’s the new interface it is referring to(codename for dev). grow up.

What’s the purpose of getting a new Newmail email address when you already have a hotmail one? Seems confusing.

Interesting. So it’s basically like the Windows 8 Mail app? Also, is Newmail just a name they use internally for new releases, or are they actually going to call it that? I thought Hotmail had a strong brand.

    • http://www.facebook.com/Luffy07 Sergio Gonzalez

agree with you, changing the name of a well known product may be a bad idea

        • http://twitter.com/dustbeta Dustin Schultz

And it hasn’t been Hotmail for years anyways. Windows Live Mail. So I assume that with this you can keep your old domain, whatever it might be.

          • Jeff

Actually the official name today is back to Hotmail, but for a while it was Windows Live Hotmail. They never officially dropped Hotmail from the name, but they tried to hide it by simply referring to it as “mail” on Windows Live sites.

          • johnshue

Actually you had the option of having a hotmail or a windows live mail account

        • Ghw3294

Who care what you think about HOTMAIL.. it works.. I have a gmail account.. it’s the pits trying to get off a message.. along with all the crap you have to go through.. to get it open… the interface is too full of junk one never uses.
I like a clean inerface for my mail.. Hotmail fits my need.. I plan on keeping it. !!!!! Grandmaw or teenager.. or just a snoty nose,  know it all.
Hotmail works.. that’s what  it’s for, any mail has those who abuse any and everything cmwind !!!!

This will be great to use when I’m stuck on a Windows 7 PC (I use the Win 8 mail app). Any idea of when this will be available?

    • Damaster – LiveSide.net

Our speculation is late July to August, if Microsoft sticks to their quarterly update schedule.

The design it’s significantly better, not too sure about the header navigation bar in the last picture though.

For clarification in regards to the new email address, does this mean users can change their primary Microsoft account (Live ID) email to this new @newmail.com address? Essentially “upgrading” to a new address without any effect to subscriptions/billing etc? If so, that’s a pretty nice feature in itself.

    • cmwind

yeah… If this rebranding is true I hope the domain can be swapped

I also kind of wish they went with Skype as the encompassing brand for communication so Skype IM, Skype Call, Skype Mail

      Skype – Communication
      Office – Productivity
      Bing – Search
      Xbox – Media
      Windows – Platforms

      • Jeff

Personally I would like email to be part of Skype. I would like to have an email address that is [myname]@skype.com.

      • http://twitter.com/leet_gamer iGamer

well Microsoft doesn’t own the newmail.com domain according to the WHOIS records, so its definitely just a codename… I’m pretty sure it will stay as Hotmail.

But why would you want to change your email? If you’ve signed up to a lot of stuff then you need the email to be the same.

    • Jeff

The name is not changing. “Newmail” is a placeholder. The development team likely uses “newmail” as a code name to describe the Metro interface. The screenshots above are not a final, released product.

Thanks to Sarah Perez at TechCrunch, who just posted on our coverage of “Newmail” http://techcrunch.com/2012/06/08/microsoft-hotmail-is-going-metro-but-wont-be-called-newmail/ – she’s hearing that Newmail is simply a placeholder, and not an attempt to rebrand Hotmail, fwiw. As she points out, Microsoft tried to rebrand Hotmail once before (to Windows Live Mail), with somewhat disastrous results. The important thing is the new interface, don’t get too worked up over what looks like, but probably isn’t, a name change.

The important thing is the new interface, don’t get too worked up over what looks like, but probably isn’t, a name change.

according to Tech Crunch, “Newmail” is just a placeholder… FWIW:

NEWMAIL is a placeholder. It is NOT the new name for Hotmail. Microsoft may try to rebrand Hotmail, but “Newmail” would not be the name.

I know it not the new name. But i would not be suprised if the add it. I mean the only hotmail. Adres you can register nowadays is jeff124@hotmail.com….. Not a real nice emailaddress lets wait an see

We know Newmail is not a new name for Hotmail. And it’s unlikely Microsoft is going to try and rebrand it again. But I would like MS to add @xbox.com and @skype.com as available domains…

Since my domain’s email is managed by Hotmail, I’m guessing it will get the new interface as well? (All three email addresses. lol)

Finally. Credit to Microsoft. This new interface looks fantastic.

The existing Hotmail / Live design is a disgraceful effort for the biggest software company in the world.

Newmail doesn’t sound right, but the design is pretty sexy. I’d say it looks fluid, but then I’ll probably be told I’m brainwashed by the Microsoft marketers

Now let’s see if it will finally learn autogrouping mails the same way as Gmail does. Only after that I can say bye-bye to Google and I’ll completely switch to Microsoft services.

It’s not good enough until I can add more than 1 mobile number to one contact without defining the second number as a “home number” and add a picture to the contact. Both are available on Gmail.

I really hope getting a new email address for this is optional (it says about getting a new email in the email in the article), because I’ve just changed my email and I don’t want to change it again!

The new interface is good. Clean and practical. However, the coloured squares with simple icons and text inside – which will be the new default Metro interface of Windows 8 – are too ugly. The old default, still used in Mac and the Linux-based systems, with not-so-huge icons and text in the bottom, is better than Metro.

Please tell me that hotmail is finally releasing the true native Exchange protocol so that I can use hotmail with Office for Mac to sync contacts, calendar, notes and email. It s unbelievable that hotmail still only supports POP for Mac, not even IMAP

This looks STUNNING. I had been initially frustrated with the overly simplistic apps in Metro Style, but this brings forward stunning simplicity, married with near full functionality. I am really looking forward to this, and I hope I can play with it all summer long. This will sell Windows 8, when people realize that this is what Windows 8 is all about. I want to play with it before rendering final judgement, but I really like what I see here. And can you PLEASE bump up the contact limit from 1500 PLEAAAASSSEEEE?!

If Hotmail has less popularity with the name name, better they can re-brand it to the new name. Like this placeholder of those screenshots. I like this new mail concept and UI design. Hope it will come soon to the market.

Will it have chat, office docs integration, facebook, skype video calling and other services……… I doubt. If they are not gonna include all then newmail won’t work………….

    • damaster

Why do you doubt? Many features you mentioned are already there in Hotmail.

Chat = Yes. Web IM is already currently supported, and continue to be integrated across Hotmail (Newmail), SkyDrive …etc.
Office docs = Yes. Hotmail already offers that, and will continue in the updated version.
Facebook = Yes. Read the third bullet point in above. We believe that right-hand side bar will be utilized for this to some degree.
Skype = Not sure yet. But we have previously mentioned that voice/video calling might be coming: http://www.liveside.net/2012/02/21/official-screenshot-confirms-that-web-based-video-chat-is-coming-to-windows-live-wave-5/  And stay tuned for more.
