MSN Revival - The January Effect

With the announcement of Windows Live in November 2005, and the transition of most existing services to the new brand in the first half of last year, the future of MSN appeared somewhat bleak. Since he was hired away from Ask.com last April, Steve Berkowitz has looked to change that perception. He has been conducting numerous interviews with the press to reinforce the idea that MSN is still an important part of Microsoft's online offerings, reassuring MSN's advertisers. Traditional banner advertising on MSN properties is performing well, according to Microsoft CFO Chris Liddell, and Berkowitz has taken steps to assure advertisers that they are not being forgotten. The in-beta video service MSN Soapbox was perhaps the first sign that not every Microsoft internet service would be headed to Live, although it now appears that this is only the beginning.

A concerted effort by the various MSN teams in a project apparently dubbed "The January Effect" will result in a significant portal-wide update over the coming weeks. An updated user-interface will be the most obvious change, as will some of the new features such as polls, ratings and message boards, all designed to increase user interaction across the various MSN properties.

These changes should hopefully remind us that MSN is still alive and kicking, and that Windows Live is only part of the bigger picture of online content, services and advertising at Microsoft.

On the SoapBox I have that to say, if the Microsoft wants to compete with the YouTube it ká is losing and ugly. I yesterday postei a video mine in the SoapBox and so far is in processing. It has one 19 hours or more than it is processing a video of 4,7 MB, this is not acceptable. Now in the Youtube, I find that it delayed one 30 or 40 minutes to make the Uploade and the video to be accessible. If SoapBox MSN not to improve, goes to be mai a service that the Microsoft goes to be in second or third, because until the Google Videos it is better that the SoapBox.

Soapbox runs great here.  Wish there was more connection between soapbox and Live.com

I think that's good. MSN is a strong brand and shouldn't just be left to die. Windows Live can be the online counterpart to Windows; MSN can be the separate web network. Windows Live is services, MSN is content. I guess.

Still, it's kinda confusing.

I agree tophtucker...Soapbox is very close to being a Live service.  But what exactly 'is' a Live service?  Microsoft has no idea, and therefore, neither do we.  Although I suppose we can make educated guesses.

Euurrghh! I hate MSN. It is ugly now compared to the new Windows Live, espcially when they try and incorporate MSN Today into Live Messenger and Live Mail!

I think they should replace MSN with a service called Windows Live News (And call MSN Soapbox, 'Windows Live Videos' or 'Windows Live Soapbox') - What is wrong with that? Start using Windows Live for content and get rid of MSN alltogther? After all, MSN does nothing anymore only displays news stories and it's confusing MS having two online services!

If they're not going to do that, then the new user interface for MSN should be consistent with the user interface of Windows Live, then it won't look as ugly!!!

calum-r-, I have to say, I disagree with you there. I agree that the inconsitency is indeed maddening, and MSN is currently a mish-mash of UIs (though I think that might get better now). BUT, I think that MSN is the much stronger brand, and that, if anything, Windows Live should just be merged back into MSN. "Windows Live News" can be the Google News-style news aggregator; I'd stick with MSN/MSNBC for the homegrown content.

"it's confusing MS having two online services!"

But you see, technically MSN isn't a service, it's a content distribution channel and portal. ;)
