MSN Revival - MSN Music gets the new UI

Following on from our post last week regarding the MSN revamp project known as "The January Effect", the first results from that are beginning to show. MSN Music and the other MSN Entertainment pages have been silently upgraded to feature the new cross-portal MSN UI.

While the UI doesn't represent a massive change from the MSN of old, the header at the top of the pages seems to be following the Windows Live approach. Its consistency allows for easier site navigation, with the new drop-down menu keeping users retained within the various MSN services. The gradient background provides a welcome break from the white background of old and gives an almost Vista-like feel.

The search bar has also increased in prominence, with the new option of being able to search both the site and the internet. Everybody know that Windows Live Search needs all the help it can get, but it seems unlikely that this move will have any effect on Google's share dominance. At this stage though, it'll be nice if Live Search manages to hold market share.

I like the new UI, the question is whether the other millions of MSN users do too.

Update: In the comments it's been noted that msn.com has had some minor tweaks now, though the changes are not as obvious as those on the entertainment sites.

it's about time they updated it! it really needed it. i visit msn movies a lot and the links never seem to bring me where i need to. so it appears that problem is fixed and things interconnect properly now. great job :)

It's good that MSN will be getting more consistant.  This is because at the moment, different pages have different UIs...and i can't count how many homepage changes they've had.

Look at msn.com -- it's gotten a bit of very minor tweaking too. Looks like the entertainment section isn't alone. :)

On a separate but related note, what annoys me is that there's MSN video (aka http://entertainment.msn.com/video), and then there's MSN video (aka http://video.msn.com). Microsoft has grown so giant that they're running out of names across the board (see: Live).

Yeah, it's about time they updated it a bit. I agree with LosHavros and tophtucker, not all the MSN sites are consistent with another. It only seems they have updated the UI of MSN and it's Entertainment sites, but what about Lifestyle, Travel, White Pages, Autos, and all the other MSN sites? It would be great if they could update the UI on those sites, AND reorganize the content in those sites. The other MSN sites that haven't gotten the UI update are already not so good themselves. I find them to be cluttered, ugly, link-filled and they should give just reorganize everything on them. But at least this is a start. Maybe "The January Effect" can do something about those too.

The update appears to be somewhat of a gradual rollout so we should see more progress over the next few weeks.

Nice spot on the MSN.com UI. The "tweaking" is somewhat disappointing when you compare it to the MSN Music site though :(

Tophtucker: Who knows why they need so many video sites. They have soapbox now too!

Indeed. I hope that's not all they're going to do........

"but what about Lifestyle, Travel, White Pages, Autos, and all the other MSN sites?"

It certainly would be nice to see them all get the same facelift!! It's been too long since MSN had one standardized style across the board.

"They have soapbox now too!"

Haha, yeah. It'd be nice if they integrated that into MSN Video more, so that you can search it all at once.

P.S. Is it just me, or is it strange that "The January Effect" only took effect in February?
