Windows Live Installer problems? Try this.

If you are having problems installing Writer, Messenger 8.5 or Mail, in particular if the the Windows Live installer disappearing halfway through (after a Windows Vista UAC prompt if enabled), this may help.

  1. Close all Windows Live applications
  2. Navigate to C:\Program Files\Windows Live and delete the Installer folder
  3. Navigate to C:\ProgramData and delete both Windows Live Installer and WLInstaller directories if you have them.
  4. Reboot (important!)
  5. Reinstall the application you want to install

This may be an issue if you installed the leak Messenger build, as all Windows Live beta applications need to be the same language. See the Windows Live Installer FAQs for more details.

PS: If someone can tell me what the equivalent for step 3 is in Windows XP that'd be great :)

Update: Apparently step 3 for XP is to go to C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data instead of C:\ProgramData. (Thanks to DN2004 for the heads up)

Update2: There is now a more official solution to this problem. See our follow post.

If you REALLY want to make my month ... I can't get Windows Live Mail Desktop to load any longer. It literally worked great for about 4 months and then one day after a reboot it no longer will open up. I'll start the app, and then it just minimizes down the tray and that's it. I can't even close it without ending the task.

Like I said, if you can find out a fix for this I'd be so thrilled.

Cool thanks for this. I guess in some ways installing the leaked Messenger build wasn't overly a good idea after all lol. Funny considering you only had to wait another 4 days for it to come out anyway.

Inky - you expected anything else? ;)

xxdesmus - sounds like you need to uninstall the application and then manually remove all the registry entries relating to it. Send me an email and I'll try to help.

Well I found a problem... all my contacts have disappeared, none in Messenger and none in Live Mail, but they're all still in my Live Hotmail... a syncing problem I guess...

Thanks for the offer Chris. I upgraded to Windows Live Mail and it seems to be working (for the moment at least). I'll drop you an email if it decides to die again. :)

Thank you, it worked for me and I was able to install WLM 8.5 and WLW (Writer) but when I tried WLM (Mail - acronym hell, here) I had to re-do it again.

Also, Writer will not open, it simply crashes. :/

Why delete files when there is a better way :P?

1. Remove all new Live setup-based products, if you managed to get any installed.

2. Attempt installation of Live setup-based product (i.e. Messenger)

3. Navigate to C:\ProgramData\WLInstaller

(replacing C with your root drive letter)

4. Locate/open latest log file.

5. Search for "entering maintenance mode". If you find something similar to the following, you're affected, otherwise stop.

SI (s) (9C:DC) [23:01:39:620]: Product registered: entering maintenance mode

6. Beginning at the top of the file again, search for "Original package ==>".

7. Take note of the package, including its full path, after the ==>.

(example: C:\Windows\Installer\28cc0b.msi)

8. Close the log file, click Start, Run and issue the following command:

msiexec /x <path>

(example: msiexec /x C:\Windows\Installer\28cc0b.msi)

9. Acknowledge any prompts and the Windows Live installer (from any previous build) will be uninstalled properly. No reboot required.

10. Dance around!

Felu - What can i do that then?

MSI (s) (30:E8) [21:56:31:031]: Original package ==> C:\DOCUME~1\user\LOCALS~1\Temp\{3FABE7A2-67E8-4D9E-965E-3C0D629A2079}\dashboard.msi

MSI (s) (30:E8) [21:56:31:062]: Package we're running from ==> C:\WINDOWS\Installer\a028da.msi

A interesting path
