  • Spaces offers new photo features

The Space Craft posted tonight on some new features for Spaces photos (thanks, Brandon!):

    High resolution photo upload,

    highres

and photo printing by HP Snapfish.

    snapfish

Now you can upload "hi resolution " photos by selecting "optimize photos for printing".  Note that there is no control over what that resolution is - the post on the Space Craft is exceptionally vague: "When you upload higher resolution photos, your photo albums look even better than before", and "...because high resolution photos are significantly larger in file size".

Snapfish, which HP bought in 2005, offers a number of services, including photo printing starting at 12 cents per picture, sharing, storage, editing, and the ability to create photo gifts such as mousepads, coffee cups, and the like.  The service through Spaces is available only in the US at this time, although more markets will be added in the future.

  • A Silly Pledge for a Good Cause

As you might expect, I read a lot of blogs, and the other night I just happened to come across an entry in Steve Kafka's blog on an unusual endeavor by some 'Softies in Mountain View.  Apparently in the classic tradition of Microsoft pranks, the software engineers/carpenters turned this:

    window before

    into this:

    window after

Now, for reasons that could only be understood after having attended too many powerpoint presentations, and drinking too many lattes,  there's an effort to tear down the wall.

When I read the blog entry, of course I had to pledge some money.  And apparently that, too, caused a bit of a stir:

    Hey Kip,

I can’t claim to be a reader, but there’s quite a bit of buzz around the office today about a charity pledge from an internet celebrity (that’s you).  Out of curiosity, was it you that made the pledge or an imposter (if that’s the latter, I’ll remove it from the database)?  If it was you, how did you find our little office prank and charity drive?  I believe that the timestamp on your pledge is earlier than most blog posts.

Now part of what makes this so funny is that although these guys say they work for Hotmail, we think it's possible they might be working on something a little newer, and more secret, than that.  Of course when LiveSide pledged, and did it "earlier than most", well that had to create a bit of a buzz, alright :).

Anyway, Aaron, who sent me the email, has been a great sport about it.  I returned an email, and kidded him about not reading LiveSide.  Well it looks like we've got a convert:

If you put up a quick post about our charity drive, I will:

    1. Sign up for an RSS Feed (and read it)
    2. Sport a sticker
    3. Sign up my closest Senior PMs from Windows Live for an RSS Feed
    4. Put a sticker on The Wall itself
    5. Send in a picture of said sticker

Awesome, Aaron, done (oh and Omar I've been giving away all your stickers.  Let me know if you need more!).

So LiveSide readers, here's your chance to make sure the Hotmail (if that's who they are) team is hard at work and not just gazing out the window.  Save a Wall, Pledge Today! (And help out Habitat for Humanity, a great cause)

  • Windows Live Custom Domains hits Wave 2

The Windows Live Custom Domains team just launched version 2.0 featuring the new Wave 2 UI and a bunch of new features.

According to their team blog the highlights of this release are:

    •  E-Mail optional domains: Your can now register a domain to host Windows Live IDs without the need to change the email provider still allowing for Windows Live Messenger use
    • Custom Adresses: You can now set up friendly names under your domain (eg. mail.liveside.net) that point to the Windows Live service
    • The default member limit has been raised to 500 (it was previously at 100) and can still be extended by request
    • An updated SDK with twice the number of methods and richer sample apps

Go and give Custom Domains a test run.....

  • Windows Live Calendar and Events sightings, coming soon?

Our friend PicturePan2 just noticed something interesting over at home.live.com, newly added icons for Windows Live Calendar, and what we assume is Windows Live Events:

    homedotlive Cal and Events

(you won't see these unless you are signed out of home.live.com)

The new icons, a calendar page and a calendar with balloons (nice!), seem to give more evidence that Calendar and Events are coming soon.  We can't wait!

PS: There's also a few g-links running around too, similar to the ones in the Hotmail and Spaces headings. Check out http://g.live.com/9uxp9en-us/hpg_hdr10 (Error - Events can't be found)
    http://g.live.com/9uxp9en-us/hpg_hdr19 (Error - Events can't be found)

  • Stickers: A Windows Live Exercise

Liveside-Glass-07Ok so the stickers are on the way.  Only about $175 US  in postage, not too bad!

We've used Windows Live Mail (and some of you have used Windows Live Hotmail), and Live Maps and Live Maps Collections, along with Windows Live Writer to get to this point.  Now we thought it might be fun to give you a chance to show off your new LiveSide stickers in the wild.

Live Maps Collections offers the ability to add in some information to the pushpins we stuck in your city when you requested stickers.  Now we're going to try and see what we can do with that.

A couple of notes here: Live Maps Collections is not a collaborative service, so we won't be able to allow you to edit your pushpins directly.  What we can do, however, is have you post some information, and I'll be happy to input it for you.  Why not, this has been fun so far!  Also I did my best to put your pushpins close to where you live, but if I missed by a lot let me know and I'll try and fix it.  If you want your pin moved "just a bit to the left", then, ummm, no. :)

So OK what we have is this:

    pushpin data box

Live Maps Collections pushpins can accept a photo url, a url for more info, and notes.  I messed around a bit, and by using SkyDrive to host a picture file, I was able to include it in my pushpin:

    hothomer pushpin

Hovering over the pushpin pops up the dialog box, and clicking on More info sends you to the url in the "URL for more info:" box (doh!).

Now one note: if you use SkyDrive (and you don't have to, use Flickr or Zooomr or your own hosted files or whatever, as long as it's a working link to a photo - or just post a picture on the LiveSide poll and we'll host it for you), you need to be careful about how you get the url:

    SkyDrive URL

Once you upload a file into a public folder in SkyDrive, and open up that file, don't use the "web address:" url that's in the properties information for the file.  Instead, right click on the photo itself, and copy the shortcut to the picture.  That way it will show up in the pushpin popup.

OK.  So once you get the stickers, take a picture.  It would be fun to see our stickers in some fun places around the world, but it's your information, and your picture, so it can be whatever you choose.  (Obviously, don't send anything offensive, or dirty, or otherwise bad.  Doing so will of course not be posted, but could get you banned from LiveSide. Just don't.  Since we control what goes in the Collection, it wouldn't do you any good anyway).

    Then:

Post a reply to the LiveSide stickers poll

    This time include:

    1. the number of your pushpin (if you're in a city with numerous pushpins, just pick one - we'll figure it out)
    2. a link to a (little square) picture, or the picture itself, and we'll host it.
    3. a note (something about yourself, or a message to our readers, whatever you want (see above)
    4. a link to more information.  This could be your blog, or a bigger version of the picture (or that download link in SkyDrive), or http://www.LiveSide.net. Again, whatever you want.

We're looking forward to seeing some fun pictures, but even if you don't play along, we hope you enjoy your LiveSide stickers, and keep reading LiveSide!

  • Live ID with CardSpace support announced as in beta

Yes the Information Card support in Live ID v5 we've been raving about has now been announced. To recap, CardSpace, and the Information Cards it manages, allows you to log into a website without entering your password, reducing the risk of both phishing attacks and keyloggers. Angus Logan gives a great walkthrough showing how to enable this Information Card support (I count 16 screenshots!) and includes a Channel9 video not yet posted on the main site.

Another key way to reduce phishing scams is by using certificates to verify the identity of websites, which as Bink spotted is why login.live.com now shows a green address bar for IE7 users (Firefox gives me a yellow address bar?). Unfortunately this only appears when using the Enhanced Signin option (https), though with all the wifi sniffing demoes going on in recent months this is something you should consider setting as default.

For those noticing the increase in Windows Live content coming out of Microsoft, Catherine Heller is the person responsible for organising all these Channel9 and On10 videos. On the topic of Live ID, there is a recent one that discusses the Web Authentication SDK. If you want to subscribe to all the Windows Live videos, here's the Channel9 feed and On10 also.

To wrap it all up, for those with multiple Live IDs who want to link them together, the response seems to be "Stay tuned :)" - that smiley face is Catherine's, not mine ;-)

  • LiveSide Stickers quick update

Just a quick note - I'll have more this weekend.  The LiveSide Stickers are all on their way!

    Some rough and quick numbers:

    • Total number of envelopes sent: just over 200
    • Total countries represented: 39
    • Postage: about $175 US

Live Maps Collections pushpins allow for an embedded image and a link, as well as notes, so this weekend I will get that together so we can collect some photos of LiveSide stickers in action!  In the meantime, your stickers should be arriving soon, some already have.  Anyway more on this over the weekend, but for now thanks for reading LiveSide, and enjoy your stickers!

The LiveSide Stickers Around the World collection is up to date, check it out, and thanks!

  • Microsoft and Nokia team up to offer Windows Live on S60 devices

Microsoft and Nokia are set to announce a new agreement that brings Windows Live services to selected Nokia S60 devices. From today, customers in 11 countries will be able to download the new Windows Live suite, giving access to Windows Live Hotmail, Messenger, Contacts and Spaces. This extends the agreement made last year whereby Live Search was to be provided as a free download for Nokia S60 handsets. New S40 devices that will be available next year will most likely have these applications pre-installed, or at the very least be able to download them too.

Windows Live Messenger for S60 has been floating around in a beta form for a few months now, and from what we've seen, users are impressed with the functionality. While the new Hotmail client doesn't feature the push email capabilities of its Windows Mobile 6 counterpart, it does allow photos and videos taken by a camera to be attached to emails. The Messenger client allows the user to set a display pictures and change status at login, as well as sending photos and voiceclips to contacts through file transfer. Check out the screenshots below to see how it looks - Phil Holden has some more pictures.

By making the core Windows Live services available on such a potentially large number of devices, Microsoft is turning Windows Live into something much larger than just Software and Services. This is starting to be about allowing users access to their information from anywhere, at any time, from any device. Windows Live Contacts is a central part of this, and as Outlook users know, contact information synching between your mobile device and PC is a very powerful and useful tool.

Nokia users can get the Windows Live applications via the Download! service on their handsets, or can visit http://www.nokia.com/windowslive for more information. The service will be offered initially as a free trial, but a monthly fee may be introduced. We heard that it could be around €2, which still sounds like a bargain. Think of all those text messages saved, though you should consider getting an unlimited data plan if you don't have one already.

And for those who like nothing better to look for the next release, we hear there may be a small beta coming later this year which advances these Nokia offerings. Time to move to Sweden :)

  • Microsoft running Live Search Trial Program for consumers - more search research

There is yet another twist on the web search research being done by by Microsoft, with the Live Search Trial Program lining up alongside the likes of Live Search Club, Imagine Live Search and as announced today, Tafiti.

The program appears to have started a few months back, and is running until October 15th 2007. It aims to monitor how 4000 users perform their searches, in particular what types of searches they perform (Web, Images, News etc) and what search engines they use. According to the FAQs it doesn't monitor the actual search terms, nor searches performed on individual sites. The monitoring is done by a software application, described as follows:

The Search Trial Assistant is a piece of software that counts the number of searches you do per day, which search engines you use, and the types of searches you do, such as searches for images, news, maps, etc. The Search Trial Assistant does not track what you search for or the web sites you visit. We are simply tabulating how many searches you are doing and on what search engine. The Search Trial Assistant will send your search counts to Microsoft on a daily basis.

Microsoft confirmed this was an extension of the Microsoft Service Credits for Web Search program, aimed at enterprises and announced back in March, with the goal "to learn and understand search behaviour to improve the search experience." In a similar manner to the enterprise program where free Microsoft software is provided to participating businesses, consumers will be offered a free 1 year OneCare subscription. Unfortunately you had to start providing information before the end of July in order to receive this, and it was invite only, but we'll keep you posted on any other promotions we hear about.

The big question is how well Microsoft will use all this search research it is gaining. The search team has been awfully quiet recently and the rumours have been flying. Roll on that Fall update Satya Nadella spoke about

  • Microsoft launches Tafiti - Search and Silverlight experiment

Tafiti, an experimental demonstration site that combines Live Search with Silverlight has just been launched. It's described as follows:

Tafiti, which means "do research" in Swahili, is an experimental search front-end from Microsoft, designed to help people use the Web for research projects that span multiple search queries and sessions by helping visualize, store, and share research results. Tafiti uses both Microsoft Silverlight and Live Search to explore the intersection of richer experiences on the Web and the increasing specialization of search.

Search results are presented in the central column, with the right hand "shelf" available to save result you are interested in via drag and drop. The carousel on the left hand side allows you to cycle through the search results you wish to view (Web, Images, RSS etc) and these too can be saved if you wish. The results you have favourited can then be shared via Windows Live Spaces.

Tafiti also features a tree view, allowing users to visualise the search results in a more "Web 2.0 / tags" kind of way. The tree can be thinned as required by dragging the slider across the bottom. Definitely a neat feature but how useful it is I'm not quite sure.

Go give Tafiti a try and let us know what you think. Do you see any features you'd like Microsoft to integrate in its Search 2.0 offering?

  • Bebo partners with Windows Live

Microsoft looks to have added another company to its growing group of Windows Live partners with Reuters reporting that Bebo is to use the platform for its social networking site. Recently declared the largest social networking service in the UK, and reputedly having 36million users globally, Bebo will add Windows Live integration by allowing its users to export and import their contacts into Bebo. Users will also be able to put an "IM Me" link on their profiles if they use the Windows Live services.

Chris Jones was quoted by Reuters, ending the piece with the line "It starts with the contact list." Microsoft's biggest advantage over Google and Yahoo is Live ID, and the centralised contact store (ABCH) ties in strongly with this. With the developer aspect of Windows Live improving rapidly, it may not be too long before we see other social networking sites using this for their own benefit. As Brandon says, Live ID web authentication and the Contacts Control both look very promising parts of the Windows Live platform.

On an aside, Bebo search is currently powered by Yahoo. It'll be interesting to see if that changes anytime soon.

  • LiveSide Stickers Around the World!

We're less than 48 hours into the LiveSide stickers giveaway, and we're already at over 100 requests for stickers.  What's even more amazing is where the requests have come from:

LiveSide Stickers (click on the picture to check out the Live Maps Collection)

I've spent a good part of the weekend stuffing envelopes, printing addresses, and adding each city/country to the "LiveSide Stickers Around the World!" Live Maps Collection.  I'm heading to the post office in the morning, where with any luck (and a handy credit card), the first batch of LiveSide stickers will leave downtown Des Moines, WA, USA, and head for all parts of the globe!

Live Maps and the Collections feature made it pretty easy to create an interesting and useful way to look at the data, although I was wishing for some better access to the data I input along with each push pin.  An easy way to save as a .csv file would have been nice, for example.  It has been almost effortless to input the pushpins into the Collection, though, and also easy to update and share the Collection. By the time we get everyone on the map, we should be able to extract some stats out of the Collection - fun LiveSide stickers facts!  Live Maps also handled finding everyone very well.  There was only one city that just wasn't on the map, Rebouleh, Lebanon.  I purposely didn't try to find your houses, I just stuck a pin as near the City name on the map as I could.  If I'm way off, let me know and I can edit.

So far preparing the stickers for mailing has been easy, too.  My method has been to open up a batch of emails in Windows Live Mail, copy/paste and revise the addresses to OneNote, take that list and type in each City/Country to Live Maps and add it to the collection, and then cut out the addresses and affix them to the envelopes (OneNote was great for arranging the addresses on a page sorted by Country, how many stickers requested, etc - I just typed things in randomly and moved them around to sort).

Now I'm typing this up in Live Writer, so it's been a nice little Windows Live exercise.

Hopefully you should be getting your stickers soon.  Next up is to keep track of when you receive your stickers (or more importantly, if you didn't), and for you to take some cool pictures of LiveSide stickers in action!  Not sure quite how to handle pictures yet, we'll keep you posted.

The sticker giveaway is still going on, but I'm going to set a cutoff date of Wednesday, August 22 at 9pm GMT, just so I don't have to keep schlepping to the post office.  Here's the details one more time:  (offer has ended, sorry)

  • LiveSide Stickers Giveaway

OK so you guys rock.  Thanks for all the help on getting LiveSide Wave 3.x going, and for all your input.  We love feedback, we love tips, and we really appreciate all the comments and suggestions.  Keep it up!

One of our readers, Daniel Ordonez, even went so far as to work with us on a new logo design.  We liked it so much we printed up some laptop stickers, and now it's time to give some away!

    Liveside-Glass-07

The stickers, made by Lightning Labels (who did a great job, btw: good quality, good price, fast personal service, highly recommended) are 2" x 4", with the LiveSide logo on a white vinyl background.  Be sure to mention LiveSide.net if you are looking for a good source of labels!

So since you all have been so good to us, we decided to skip the bother of self addressed envelopes and such.  So for our members, we're just going to give them away. Send an email to kip*at*liveside*dot*net with "Stickers, I want some!" in the subject line, include your member name, a mailing address where we can send them, and we'll send you a pair of LiveSide.net stickers. If you REALLY want more, then let us know in the email and we'll consider it.

NOTE: We will be using these addresses (email and physical) for sending the stickers out ONLY.  We won't be keeping the emails, any personal information, or signing you up for any spam or stalking your house.  We may keep track of what city you're from, but only as a way to create a Live Maps Collection of where all the stickers went.  If you are overly concerned about this, however, I guess you don't get any stickers.  But really, we will be very careful with your information, and will delete it as soon as we send out the stickers. This is not an attempt to gather any personal information, we just had a crapload of stickers printed up and we want to make it as easy for you to share the LiveSide love as we can.

So, to get your LiveSide stickers:

    1. Email to kip*at*liveside*dot*net
    2. use "Stickers, I want some!" in the subject line
    3. Include your LiveSide.net member name (if you haven't yet, you can Join Here)
    4. Update: Include a real name, please.  I don't think the post office will know your LiveSide user name!
    5. Don't forget a mailing address where we can send the stickers (2 each, unless you are good at begging)
    6. Your personal information will not be used for any other purposes
    7. Wait a bit, we're not sending them out overnight express, fergawdsakes.

This is a limited time offer.  (Offer has ended, sorry)  We want you to have some stickers, but we won't be doing this for long.  If you want stickers, email now!

Update: This is a worldwide offer :).  The postage is probably gonna kill me, but what the hey.  Our readership is worldwide, so of course we want worldwide LiveSide sticker coverage!

  • Live ID sneaks in Info Card right under our noses

We've been telling you about Info Card for quite a while, but in all the excitement (and a few bugs to iron out) surrounding the new Live ID associations with LiveSide Community Server log in, it took us a minute to notice that Info Cards are live and working, and right here on LiveSide!

A note on the naming (hey it's Microsoft, you knew this was coming, right?): The current name for the cards seems to be "Information Card", formerly Info Card, and while we and others noticed a name change to "CardSpace", that seems to be the name of the Information Card manager.

    WindowClipping (7)

Here's how to get started with Information Cards:

Start by clicking on the Windows Live ID "Sign In" at the top right of our home page (you may have to sign out first)

    1. First you need to set up an Information Card.  In the text above "Sign in with:...", click on "Information Card"
    2. Then click on "Sign In":

    WindowClipping (8)

      3.  Click on the Live ID you want to build an Information Card for, verify your password, and customize your Info Card:

    infocard

      4.  For right now, the only personal information you can store is a name and a picture.  That will change, however, as the help file shows:

    infocardhelp

      5.  Next, to sign in with the Information Card, choose it from the drop down box in your Live ID sign in:

    infocardsignin

And that's it!  Not very useful yet, but fun!

We'll have more of course as the Information Cards become more functional, but for now, about the only place you can get one is on LiveSide! (and heck, we almost didn't notice ourselves!)

Update: Long tells me this isn't fully working for him (he can create a card (in Windows IE7), but can't sign in with it, so it may be US only (??)

  • Windows Live Calendar dogfood running - Get ready for a beta

It was hinted at earlier in the week with the Windows Live Hotmail update, yes the Windows Live Calendar beta is fast approaching.  Its now available to some special people in a dogfood form (pre-beta) at http://dogfood.calendar.live.com/. Unfortunately if you aren't a Microsoft employee you'll just be seeing the MSN Calendar, but at least you now know it really does exist :)

Microsoft needs to deliver a good calendar service to both stem the rapid growth of Google's Calendar and to deliver an all round suite of online services. With software and services being the current buzzwords, we're just hoping it doesn't take another 2 years to see a Calendar desktop application. For those who notice these details, it was pointed out that Windows Live Mail removed the calendar button in the transfer from Mail desktop, however a convenient blank space was left behind for the future.

As was the case with the original Mail beta (now Hotmail), the online Calendar beta service has been written from scratch. While nothing has been confirmed officially yet about the features, talk of .ical support and calendar sharing has been heard.

I guess we might as well start the Calendar beta feature requests now...
