Live Search comes to Facebook with custom search page

Mashable just spotted the new implementation of Live Search integrated into Facebook.  According to Mashable:

The implementation is fairly straightforward: in the search box on the top right of Facebook, which is also used for quick access to your friends’ profiles and intrasite search, there is now an option to “Search the Web,” which in turn triggers a query of Microsoft Live Search. Results then display within a custom interface designed for Facebook.

Windows Live Expo joins the Windows Live deadpool

Windows Live Expo, the Craigslist wannabe classified ads product,  is heading for what TechCrunch likes to call the “deadpool”. This follows closely on the heels of announcements shutting down Live Search Books and Academic.  A notice on the site appeared today, informing users that the site will cease operations on July 31:

exposhutdown

Some aspects of Expo have already been closed down, and users are no longer able to:

  • Create a new account
  • Post a new listing
  • Extend a listing
  • Upgrade a listing to a premium listing

All items currently on Expo will remain until they expire (or until July 31, whichever comes first).

Expo began on February 28, 2006 with a Hello World post on their blog (which hasn’t been updated since last September).

Thanks to Josh Jacob (Tegument) for the heads up.

It's ironic how Expo shuts on the same day that I read eBay is in trouble:

I never really used Expo, as I never found UK items, and then never looked again.

It's good that MS is sorting the wheat from the chaff though, and hopefully they can focus more on improving their useful products

(NB to MS: please update live.com!)

I totally agree with Foaf, Plus they need to update WLCalendar (it's been over 6 month since the beta release) and release a mobile version of Calendar they also need to update My.live.com

BTW my.live.com with MSN TV Listing Gadget works for the UK, FYI

Not surprised really.  MS is really good about releasing "Me Too" products then forgetting about them with no updates and no promotion.  Then wonder why they haven't been successful.  I'm expecting a lot of Live Services to go the way of the Dodo.

Sad really.

What's next, Live Favorites? Hasn't been updated since launch either.

At least Expo deserved to crash. The service was cruddy, offered nothing better than the competition, and the UI was outdated. Good riddance. Oh, and calling it "Expo" instead of something simple like "Classifieds" is another strike. I wonder who manages such crud like this.

All this does is give Windows Live more bad publicity.
