Live Search comes to Facebook with custom search page

Mashable just spotted the new implementation of Live Search integrated into Facebook.  According to Mashable:

The implementation is fairly straightforward: in the search box on the top right of Facebook, which is also used for quick access to your friends’ profiles and intrasite search, there is now an option to “Search the Web,” which in turn triggers a query of Microsoft Live Search. Results then display within a custom interface designed for Facebook.

Windows Live Calendar Upgraded

Live Calendar has had an (Wave 3) upgrade whilst I was asleep. No major UI change, but there is some new stuff! Events are now integrated, in other words you can now create events from within Calendar. Old news, check out the other updates below.

LiveCalendar1

You can also subscribe to public calendars, well ehh later anyways as there are problems subscribing to calendars right now.

LiveCalendar2

I will sure have a look at which ones are available once it is. There may be more changes, there is no official list or announcement available at this time.

Update: A few other bits people have spotted in the comments. There's now Firefox 3 support, printing can now be done in day/week/month view instead of just agenda view and there's also some more languages available (no specifics sorry).

For the curious, we've heard there are some bits of this update wrapped up in the dogfood test site, which we mentioned previously before Calendar actually rolled out the public beta (no access unless you are an employee, sorry). Here's an apparent taster of what's going on behind the scenes: Image removed at the request of Microsoft as it was potentially confusing in the context of this post, unreleased features + UI etc.

Update 2: More features still appearing. There's now a Birthdays calendar that is automatically created, which shows all the birthday's of your Windows Live Contacts. This still appears to be rolling out to people as I didn't have it 30 mins ago, and Sunshine still doesn't have it (PicturePan2 had it hours ago). Check the screenshot below. Also the link from Hotmail to Windows Live Calendar now works (finally!) and features a migration screen for new users.

Update 3: Official blogpost from the Windows Live Calendar Team appeared:

New coolness delivered in this update includes:

  1. - Birthday Calendars that automatically create events and reminders for your contacts’ birthdays. (Make sure to add birthdays to your contacts. Add the birthday to your own profile, too: http://spaces.live.com/profile.aspx?action=edit&mode=activecontacts. That way others who subscribe to your contact update will get a reminder about your own birthday!)
  2. - iCal Subscriptions that allow you to show calendars that update automatically from around the web. (This will be up and running very shortly!)
  3. - Holiday Calendars that are automatically added to your account depending on what country you’re in. Many more are coming, but in this update, there are holidays for: China, Taiwan, Hong Kong, Thailand, Singapore, Malaysia, Korea, Indonesia, Philippines, India, Russia, France, the United States, Spain, German and the United Kingdom
  4. - A number of user interface changes including the ability to right click on calendars in the calendar list and to reorder that list
  5. - Improvements to accessibility functionality, including better tabbing and F6 key support
  6. - Additional print views that allow you to print from the day, week and month views
  7. - The ability to directly connect to the Windows Live Calendar beta via the calendar tab in Windows Live Hotmail
  8. - Vikram S., one of our dev leads, says that we shouldn’t add any more to this list as it will look like we’re trying to squeeze juice from a rock!

Still no Birthday Calendar for me (Sunshine) tho...

Update? Yes.

Wave 3? No.

Looking at the version number, Calendar has been upgraded from 12.4.0078.0129 to 12.5.0114.0620. And from the looks of it it was built on June 20.

Wave 3 products are expected to carry the version 14 tag (from looks of the Windows Live Mail internal beta version).

Sunshine,

Creating events from inside Live Calendar isn't new - you could do that before.

Ability to subscribe to public calendars though is a HUGE step forward. Really pleased about that one!

Printing a calendar has also changed.   You can now print in day/week/month view.  Used to be only agenda view.

But where is sync with my mobile device? :-\

damaster: this was the Wave 3 M1 update, though the the wave 3 part of the ugrade isn't publicly viewable yet. It'll be up at dogfood.calendar.live.com for private testing (erroring at the moment). check out the update above.

Ray & HB8 - nice spot, added that into the update in the post above.

Jamie - yeah my fault on the Events, miscommunication on my part when talking to Sunshine yesterday.

Looks like there is a new "Birthday Calendar" feature that leverages birthday dates from your contact list.

I hope now they will make it soon available for sync with outlook and mobiles. (free sync with outlook only possible with old calendar) so I can cancel my mobile me account asap :-)

If you are looking for the free outlook connector it's over here: office.microsoft.com/.../HA102225181043.aspx (It's the dutch page)

@ spider

The first time you install outlook connector, it takes about 1-2 hours before syncronisation starts. Did you wait long enough? Did you also try to restart?

yanverm wrote re: Windows Live Calendar Upgraded

@ spider

Forgot to mention that live calendar beta can not be synced yet... only the old version can be synced for the moment. hope they will fix that soon...

i have hotmail live plus and i can't sync calendar with old version...

I live in Italy...

yanverm wrote re: Windows Live Calendar Upgraded

@ nnbe : I have a paid account, so it works. But if I read the microsoft outlook connector page, it says:

"uw Windows Live Hotmail-account gratis aansluiten in Microsoft Office Outlook 2007 of Outlook 2003. "

Wich means: "You can use your Windows Live Hotmail account FREE with Microsoft Office Outlook 2007 or 2003"

You should give it a try and let me know! It would be  a good thing. Gmail, etc is also offering it free

Outlook Connector provides a free solution for managing your Windows Live Hotmail e-mail and contacts from within Outlook(1). With the new release of the Outlook Connector, you can connect your Windows Live Hotmail account in Microsoft Office Outlook 2007 or Outlook 2003 free of charge.

but...

(1) Access to Windows Live Hotmail calendar in Microsoft Office Outlook currently remains a feature for MSN Premium customers.

And MSN Premium customers is not available in Europe... :-(

yeah it's good they have done a refresh even tho it's taken them 8 months.

I've been having issue with their reminders sending via e-mail and Windows Live Alerts hopefully they have fixed that.....

they need to release a mobile version and a way to sync it to outlook or even over the air via a mobile app (windows live for mobile)

sp1der wrote re: Windows Live Calendar Upgraded

when they release the final version of live calendar? (with calendar sync with outlook  and outlook mobile)?

do you know?

nnbe wrote re: Windows Live Calendar Upgraded

@ yanverm: my outlook 2007/outlook connector reported "calendar sync is for subscribers only". I guess free account does not work with calendar sync.

Thank you.

Hi guys, the windows live calendar keeps changing my options (many times) after I change to my preferred choices. The options that the calendar automatically changed to are:

- Language sometimes was changed to Chinese;

- Timezone changed to GMT;

- First day of week changed to Sunday;

- No reminder

Anyone have an idea why?
