Live.com - announcing "Ultimate" improvements?

Conspicuously missing from all the wave 2 upgrades and marketing for the new look Windows Live has been Live.com, the one time personalized home page of the future.  Once the golden child of Windows Live, touted as the future of the home page, then mired in performance problems, low usage numbers, and a lack of a coherent monetization strategy, Live.com has seemingly lost favor within Microsoft, if it was ever in favor at all.  In fact we've heard nothing from the Live.com blog for nearly six months, until last week.

With Live Search concentrating efforts on capturing current MSN users, it doesn't make much sense to push anyone away from the MSN.com home page toward Live.com. Yet in another example of the branding confusion we've come to know from Microsoft, instead of consolidation or renewed emphasis on Live.com, Windows Live rolled out yet another new home page that seemingly competes with both MSN.com and Live.com, Windows Live Home.

Yet last week the Live.com team did blog again, in a somewhat embarrassing post that mainly rehashed months old information about other Windows Live products, but did offer a bit of encouragement:

As a team we shall continue the great work on new stuff. We know you all are eager to know the details! Unfortunately it’s not yet ready to be disclosed. But stay tuned to hear back from us sooooon:-)

For those of us that follow the antics of Microsoft, this post sounded all too eerily familiar.  Much like the Windows Vista Ultimate team, who somehow seem to think empty promises and occasional blog posts are all that we deserve, what we're getting from the Live.com team is, as a commenter on the blog post said - "too little, too late".  Brandon LeBlanc says "If I were Lenovo, Qwest, or Verizon I’d be pissed Microsoft has waited so long to update Live.com especially having their brands attached to the site."  Although luckily we didn't have to pay a premium for Live.com the way Ultimate Extras buyers paid, expecting much out of Live.com at this point is about as pointless as waiting for Ultimate Extras.  Too little, too late, indeed.

those poor 'Softies. i logged on to my guest account today, opened IE and the home page was a GooglePage, and it seemed far far better than Live.com. I hope they finally figure out what the heck they are doing...

but they probably wont

I use live.com everyday as my homepage and find it brilliant. Googles IG is nice and quick, but I prefer the integration of Live Hotmail and Live Favorites into Live.com. Shame there's no news, but thanks for keeping a look out.

AFAIK last I heard, live.com development had stopped and the team was moved into live search and other projects.

I wouldn't expect any updates to live.com any time soon.

No they are going to update sometime in 2008 (maybe even near the start), I assume, because they said in their blog "details which aren't ready to be released yet". So they are definately working on things and they have to anyway because it is not Wave 2 yet... they aren't just going to leave it now are they? *ponders that rhetorical question, but then takes a look at Windows Lve Favourites*  Hmmmm....

There are a few services that aren't upgraded to Wave 2 yet, and those services haven't undergone changes for months now.

These services are Alerts, Favorites and Live.com. Alerts won't go down because it's much-used (for example by the MSDN Forums), but Favorites... I don't know.

Favorites is supposed to replace the good ol' bookmarks-button in IE/Fx/Opera/whatever, but it's inconvenient. It isn't designed as a social bookmarking site (like del.icio.us or StumbleUpon), so it doesn't compete there. It's unusable for desktop usage because it lacks browser integration.

Live.com and Favorites being the only two services that have been the same for months, and don't add much to the existing services elsewhere on the web  (live.com competes with iGoogle, Netvibes, etc etc), they'll have to do some hard work to keep up-to-date, or else the projects might be cancelled by MSFT...

Alex - I totally agree about Live Favorites, it is incovnient and somewhat slow (compared to a client favorites list). But as a backup and location free favorites service it has been invaluable. I wish it was part of the Windows Live Mobile suite.

To Alex and Foaf - download the Live toolbar, it then interates the favorite site onto IE. It works really, really well.

I do wish they would get the whole Live, MSN sorted. Maybe they could merge them like they did with Hotmail and Live mail.

I love the live homepage. I have nine pages set up with RSS feeds galore. It is awesome.

Regarding live.com, as rein mentions above a lot of employees were moved onto Live Search which is why development has stagnated. We've heard that a new team has taken over however, so maybe by early 2008 we'll see some changes.

But I don't want the Live Toolbar, that's just wasting screen real estate. I just want my favorites in IE or Firefox.

I have 8 pages, with some 60 feeds in total. It loads pretty fast, so I'm happy :)
