Windows Live Messenger 8.1 to be released soon

The latest incremental version WL Messenger is set to be released as soon as January 25th, according to a post on Windows X's Shrine.  Whether or not it meets that actual date, the new version should be out to the public very soon.  Picturepan2 lists the features and improvements of the new version:

• Redesigned, smarter contact cards give you more data about and easier access to your friends
• Your display name, status and personalization roam with you to any computer
• Try PC-to-phone calling with two free calls to virtually any phone in the world*
• Better server performance
• Improvements to automatic updates
• Improved sign-in performance

BTW speaking of Messenger, Wendy "the Mighty" posted an interesting plea for opting in to the Customer Experience Improvement Program (CEIP), saying that the information is very useful to Microsoft in tracking down problems, and that very few users actually opt in.

MS really dont listen to their customers when it comes to Live Messenger....and time between 8.0 and 8.1 is still too long IMHO.

I am waiting this anxious Messenger! The improvements are each better day!

Two problems that she doesn't get:

1. The CEIP sounds like stealing information from your computer (with your consent).  It's not literally true but for me myself I felt very uncomfortable with it and eventually disable it (I don't know if I'm doing it correctly and completely disabled it).  And honestly the message is not friendly either.  If MS is really interested then at least do it secretly (like google and amazon) and provide a 'clear' history of what has been sent.

Therefore, transparency + honestly.

2. I get the feeling that LiveMesg is not interested when they DISABLED comments on their blog!  Whether the comments are friendly or not, at least it shows that there's a generic interests in IE and it's still relevant.  Comments are the best way (and the most direct way) for your (potential) customers to tell you your problem easily.  (Who wants to do "feedback" at MS Live site anyway?  It's not only difficult but unfriendly in the way that they "explicitly" tell you they WILL NOT response to your feedback!)

Therefore, enable the comments, and let's opinion flow.  The thing worse than criticism is NO criticism.

3.  I'm still using 7.5 and I won't switch until LiveMesg provides tabbed conversation management (like Gaim).  Whoever has to manage 10 dialog boxes on the taskbar must admit it's horrible.  And if liveMesg pulls another IE7-like switch on me I will switch to Gaim and never look back.

The beta was the worst managed beta I've ever been in. No feedback from the team at all in the newsgroups. Barely any releases to the testers.

Also the quality of messenger has gone way way down.

If the public release does not fix all the problems I'm having I'm gonna look at using a different IM app.

1.......

Try adding new features that will make a significant difference to the experience, such as Tabbed Chats (iyuen - You can replicate this with Messenger Plus Live - www.msgpluslive.com)

2.......

Try talking more about the product than other irrelavent things in the WLM Blog - it seems that much of Windows Live is becoming near abandonware - few updates and none of the innovation we saw last year

Hey it's great to hear that it's coming soon. I use both Y! Messenger and Live Messenger, and I love Live Messenger a whole lot more. It's great to hear these new updates. Unfortunately, most friends I know of use AIM. But if Windows Live Messenger keeps getting better and better, more people might switch.

On the other hand, LiveSide, I don't know if you've heard, but Windows Live can help save nine million kids with this new initiative : http://click4thecause.live.com/search/charity/default.aspx?source=offn

are you going to report on this?

Just force everyone to be in the CEIP. Only conspiracy theorists will complain.
