Windows Live Hotmail M10 begins rollout

Thanks to Brandon for pointing to the Windows Live Hotmail team's Spaces blog, announcing the upcoming rollout of M10 (milestone 10) of the Windows Live Hotmail (formerly Windows Live Mail, formerly Kahuna) beta.  According to the blog entry:

You can expect to see the following updates/fixes/changes in M10:

  • Windows Live Hotmail branding.
  • Faster & More Reliable.
  • Classic Version enhancements such as Spell Check, improved Photo Upload Control, and Bi-directional language support.
  • Improved Safety Bar.
  • Version Picker (choose "Classic" or "Full").
  • More "forgiving" checkboxes.

The Hotmail Team rolls out Milestone updates in waves by server bays instead of all at once. So if you've not been updated, give it some time. You'll know you're updated once you see the "Windows Live Hotmail" branding in the header.

A quick check of my Windows Live Mail account shows I'm not upgraded yet, on bay 117.  Anyone spot the new Windows Live Hotmail?  What bay are you on?

It's not up on bay 101 or bay 126 yet, either.

Not on bay 117w, bay 121w, or bay 107w.  Maybe tomorrow.

AndyD wrote re: Windows Live Hotmail M10 begins rollout

I just signed up for an @windowslive.com email, and activated Live Mail on bay 120, but still nothing there.

Chris wrote re: Windows Live Hotmail M10 begins rollout

M10 is now available on bays 101 and 123. With the new build however it seems that you cannot switch to these bays from any other bays, so it is a waiting game now.

This is an interesting development, because it was only a few hours ago that I was able to switch to bay 101, I didn't try bay 123. I guess they must be in the process of pushing out the builds at this very moment!

nico wrote re: Windows Live Hotmail M10 begins rollout

got it on bay 101, font has changed to verdana, its more responsive/faster, few changes to the status bar, and the menu buttons have moved, that's pretty much it.

I tried to access http://by101w.bay101.mail.live.com and http://by123w.bay123.mail.live.com, but I'm not able to do this! I'm redirected to the 113 bay automatically. What can I do to try M10???

vipwoody wrote re: Windows Live Hotmail M10 begins rollout

Yeah, I have the same problem... when trying to access bay 101 and 123 I automatically get transferred to bay 113 or 119.

I think it is a matter of time for all the people to have it

someone at wikipedia has already uploaded a screenshot of M10, http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/5/55/HotmailM10Inbox.png

I have no idea how to check which "bay" I'm in. (Never even heard the term until this article.) But I still have to STRENUOUSLY protest that this rebranding is unnecessary and even counterproductive.

Then again, and by way of explanation, I'm a writer by profession. Writing, whether fiction or non-fiction, novels to advertising copy *to branding*, has one virtue above all others: brevity.

Windows Live Mail = more virtuous than Windows Live Hotmail. Then again, Hotmail = more virtuous than Windows Live Mail. What we have here is either a case of 3 unnecessary letters or 11 unnecessary letters, and for Microsoft to transition into a new era online, the Windows Live ought to stay. Ditch the "Hot" from Windows Live Mail. Hotmail was great; it's time to MOVE FORWARD.

Legion, your bay number can be found in the url when you're logged into mail.live.com.

Just got upgraded.

Initial load time went from 8-12 seconds to 2-5 seconds. It's now around as fast as Gmail.

On the other hand, I vastly preferred the way you switched between Inbox, Today and Contacts in M9. M10 is ugly, and less intuitive (even if clearer).

nico wrote re: Windows Live Hotmail M10 begins rollout

Is there messenger integration in m10? The only account i have that was upgraded has no contacts in, i saw it in this article it has: http://www.pcmag.com/slideshow_viewer/0,1205,l=203771&s=1489&a=203711&po=2,00.asp

also have you reported about the audio player, i only discovered it today, it was news to me... http://img126.imageshack.us/img126/7118/mp3playervt7.jpg

agree to the Legion and I say more. The Microsoft must not have changed the name of the Windows Live Mail for Windows Live Hotmail. If I have an email of the Hotmail or of the MSN, the change of the name would be correct. But if I have the email of Live.com, must have continued as Windows Live Mail. The problem is that the Microsoft did not make the change of the site of entrance for the Windows Live Mail and one I specify for who uses the email of the Hotmail \ MSN. Perhaps either therefore that some, had not obtained to see that they were two services with different names. Guilt of the Microsoft for the confusion in the head of some users.

I've been running M10 on bay 124 for about a week or so. Hate the name but I like it overall

Chris wrote re: Windows Live Hotmail M10 begins rollout

Nico: Messenger integration in WL Hotmail is the same as regular Hotmail. If you are using IE it will show the status of your buddies (Similar to WLMd). We mentioned the audio player too previously, but didn't say much about it.

tophtucker wrote re: Windows Live Hotmail M10 begins rollout

I've been upgraded now...

I agree, I don't like the new placement of the Today/Mail/Contacts/Calendar navigation. That was better in M9. And isn't it about time that Calendar get upgraded?

Matthew wrote re: Windows Live Hotmail M10 begins rollout

I've been on bay117 and was upgraded tonight to Hotmail M10.  The text is different, Verdana, and the wideness is a little annoying to me.

Bay 119 has been upgraded.

One welcome change is the return of the "New" option, which enables you to begin a new email from anywhere within the program, instead of being forced to first return to "Mail", as was the case with M9.

Change to 4gb will likely lure a lot of GMail and YahooMail users.

I've had numerous colleagues switch once they realized it's light-years ahead of the Hotmail they remember -- and that was on M8 and M9!
