More Information On the Spaces Update [Even More Info Added]

The Spaces update has started rolling out now so I thought I would take this time to just go through a few of the new changes, showing what's new.

New Home Page and the New Windows Live Bar

I made a slight error with the link I gave in my previous post, the home page that has been updated isn't http://spaces.live.com/ but the user home page which can be found at http://<spacename>.home.services.spaces.live.com/. The new layout allows you to easily go to add a new blog entry, add photos, friends, and more:

You can also see that the new Windows Live theme has been applied, and with it comes a new menu structure for the Windows Live Orb:

The new Windows Live bar is also shown on the Space's main page:

Birthdays

The new birthday notification is in your spaces home page and displays all your contacts who have an upcoming birthday:

This gives you the option to send your contact an eCard should you so wish.

List Ordering

Going to the edit page for a list now gives you a box next to each item where you can customise the list and order it how you want it ordered:

New Photos Features

There is now an option on the bottom left of each picture in your photos that offers a full screen showcase of the photos in that album:

And also a link to download the photo:

I personally would love to see a "Download album" button to follow on from this.

Templates and Blog Titles

You can now apply a template to your Space, so if your a keen blogger and not fussed about having other modules, there is a template for that, and many more:

Blog titles now actually link to that blog entry, before you had to go to the end of the entry and click on the permalink link, now you don't need to.

If your space has not been updated but want to see the changes, then visit my Space http://scottisafool.spaces.live.com/ as this is where I have taken my screenshots from. If you notice something I have missed, feel free to leave a comment.

Oh good! I was wondering why I couldn't see the new header!

I'm glad they're implementing the new header already. I still miss the magnifying glass and think they could've organized the Live menu into more categories (because, face it, most people will be only visiting the Windows Live service dropdown anyway)...

Does the "Upcoming Birthdays" include Email alert?

Thanks.

oooo i like i like!  finally they made some of the changes i requested :D

But here's what i DON'T like:

- they took the word "Spaces" out of the header bar

- it's still kinda slow.. better.. but still not good enough

- the 'spy glass' button was replaced witih "search" (i agree with u Mirek2!)

- the live menu could be organized better.. i say.. less clicks is always better.. too many submenus are not good (i liked it better before, but wish it loaded faster)

anyways.. yay I'm glad they're still updating :).. keep it Spaces team!

The orb is a bit scrappy isn't it?

Seems interesting. I just hate that they replaced the iconic 'spyglass' button.

I have a question...

Shouldn't there be a competition between Facebook, MySpace, and Live Spaces?

I see no competition between Live Spaces and the other two.

As I can also see that Facebook is taking the lead.

Shouldn't Live Spaces be completely web 2.0 and decrease all that graphics that makes it to load at lower speeds?

This is the problem in Microsoft, they use lots of colors, graphics, and magic to their websites that makes them load so slowly.

Look at Google, everything is clean and simple... and loads in seconds.

Live Spaces should really use some simple graphics to enter the competition. I don't use Live Spaces since it is slow for my connection.

Your thoughts are welcomed.

Regards,

Woody

I dont' really think it's the graphics.. the graphics are fine, yahoo has tons of graphics yet their sites are nice and fast.. it's the way they code things.. they need to use more AJAX technique.

I'm loving these new updates.. but another thing that their missing is I can't preview my space!!!... I'd like to be able to see my media player gadget and everything the way my friends see it!
