Windows Live Hotmail gets update - 5GB inboxes for free, 10GB for Plus

Yes the Hotmail team has been quiet for a while since their v1 launch, however they've just launched a small but feature-packed update. As well as offering free accounts the new storage size of 5GB, paying customers (Hotmail Plus or MSN Premium) now get 10GB.

Ellie over on the Hotmail team has blogged the full list of changes, here's a few we're glad to see released:

  • Improved contact management lets you merge duplicate contacts. This is a personal favourite, so nice work by the Contacts team.
  • Auto-away messages, useful for when you go on holiday
  • Account forwarding, so now you can forward your Hotmail account to Gmail or Yahoo. Why you'd want to do that I don't know ;)

As is usual with the Hotmail updates, features will be rolled out to the various bays in order to minimise any potential problems. We'll keep you updated on how this progresses.

The ability to sync my calendar with my windows live hotmail plus account is needed... they allow it with MSN premium and allowed it with Hotmail Plus but not Windows Live Hotmail Plus

Windows Live Calendar? What's taking so long?

I thought they would have (or should have) integrated it in Live Hotmail by now. Still don't understand why they didn't do it before coming out of beta, but it isn't too late to do it right now.

Not that I use it, but I was kind of hoping the whole thing would be feature complete by now. Kind of a letdown to see the old MSN Hotmail calendar UI in your Live Hotmail.

You used to be able to change bays, its annoying you no longer cannot. A screenshot would be fantastic as Aho said :)

There is also this message on the MSN uk homepage:

"Get ready: Hotmail.com is changing to Mail.live.com

- A brand new look from tonight, but still with all the same features

- Don't worry: none of your saved mails or contacts will be lost"

So overall, it soulds like a lot of changes are being done!

Well it just seems to be getting worse for MSN Premium customers... Not only do we not get to use the new and beautiful UI, but I still only have 2GB...how great is that? And to make it worse, Microsoft keeps telling me about something I can't have. (albertceo.spaces.live.com/.../cns!3A485499112E425D!709.entry)

Seems like either Bay 117 is down, or they're currently updating it. I can't login at the hotmail website.... (i126.photobucket.com/.../HotmailError.png)

LIVE CALENDAR!  With ability to subscribe to others' calendars or RSS feed of calendar (Like subscribing to a University calendar) and ability to sync the calendar to a Windows Mobile Device without having to go through Outlook.  We've got Live mail on mobile, why not our Live Calendars? Or hell, even a mobile web version of the Calendar would work but we don't have that either :-(

I hope this new Hotmail version will contain many translation fixes.

The Dutch version is a little bit buggy.

@Mishraz  if you have a look at the official blog, they said it will be a rolling update and will take a few weeks for everyone to be updated.

in my opinion this is a great update.

what I really don't like about hotmail is (beside other things) that they're deleting all your mails after a certain time without a login.

G-Z I believe that inactivity period you mention is now 180 days, so it shouldn't be so much of an issue now as it was in the past.

As mentioned, it might take a week or more for you to receive the update.

They have now updated the links on the MSN uk homepage to this:

"Get ready: Hotmail.com is changing to Hotmail.live.com

Eairler on today it said mail.live.com not hotmail.live.com.

Hotmail.live.com actually works too which it did not a few weeks now so it looks like it will be the new address to access Windows Live Hotmail!

I know that a 180 days limit for deleting an account shouldn't be a problem. But somehow I just don't like the feeling, that all my mails could be deleted, even if this case is very improbable.

I mean Google Mail doesn't have such a limit and I don't know why Hotmail should have it.

So I will have 10 GB... cool... but a little to much for me at the moment (using about 600 MB for mails ;-) ) But hopefully it will be possible to link it to live skydrive, so you have 10GB or more storrage for data etc.  ;-)

Id, we are still waiting for that live calender, is this 5-10 GB update a trick to keep us quiet about the calender ? :-)

Oh, I see you're talking about bay numbers.. have some more that are not updated yet: 107,111,116,119 ... (of course, all the bays where I have email adsresses on... yes, so many addresses and non updated... tssss...)

Paying customers (Hotmail Plus or MSN Premium) now get 10GB?!?!?

That is great news if the upgrade actually worked.  I still get this dreaded message, ever since beta up to the present, on my main MSN Premium account when I try to upgrade.  And MSN Support claims they can't do anything about it still.

"Sorry, but it looks like you won't be able to participate in Windows Live Hotmail at this time.

This might be because:

Your account is with one of our partners and has additional features that Windows Live Hotmail doesn’t support yet

Windows Live Hotmail isn’t available in your area at this time

You have a parentally controlled account

Your Windows Live ID indicates you're under 13"

Hotmail Team:  Instead of offering all these upgrades for the free accounts, how about concentrating first on resolving the upgrade problems for the MSN Premium email accounts of "paying customers".
