Windows Live Calendar dogfood running - Get ready for a beta

It was hinted at earlier in the week with the Windows Live Hotmail update, yes the Windows Live Calendar beta is fast approaching.  Its now available to some special people in a dogfood form (pre-beta) at http://dogfood.calendar.live.com/. Unfortunately if you aren't a Microsoft employee you'll just be seeing the MSN Calendar, but at least you now know it really does exist :)

Microsoft needs to deliver a good calendar service to both stem the rapid growth of Google's Calendar and to deliver an all round suite of online services. With software and services being the current buzzwords, we're just hoping it doesn't take another 2 years to see a Calendar desktop application. For those who notice these details, it was pointed out that Windows Live Mail removed the calendar button in the transfer from Mail desktop, however a convenient blank space was left behind for the future.

As was the case with the original Mail beta (now Hotmail), the online Calendar beta service has been written from scratch. While nothing has been confirmed officially yet about the features, talk of .ical support and calendar sharing has been heard.

I guess we might as well start the Calendar beta feature requests now...

Oh wow, they took their time. Can't wait to test this out, I would like to see the ability to sync my calendar with outlook using my Windows Live Hotmail Plus subscription but I doubt we will see that.

I'll want in, although I doubt very much they'll open it to Australian testers any time soon.

I had really lost hope that we would EVER see anything.

Wow, finally.  At least there's something to look forward to.  I hope...

I'm curious though.  As much as I respect the Live Services teams and enjoy and use many of the Live Services put out, it seems though Calendar has been neglected for a *very* long time.  I wonder how the new Calendar is going to fill real users needs?  I know the purpose of dogfooding their product is to give the product some real time testing, but how many Microsoft engineers use MSN Calendar religiously and intensely as their  sole calendar over Outlook?  Will they know how Calendar really fulfills the needs of real users in different situations?

I've already heard the argument that if one wants a real Calendar, one should use Outlook.  But so much of what I do is now tied within Live Services, that there really should be a feature rich calendar app which can really fulfill Live Hotmail users needs.

I hope they consider how to make Calender a more useful and productive app to make users lives more productive as well.  Nonetheless, I'm still looking forward to seeing a new Calendar.

Chris, do you really belive that live mail was written from the ground up? I don't belive it. I don't see any real difference and its the slowest mail sytems out there. I really want them to succeed but that kind of work just doesn't cut in. Hope calendar guys did better work.

this is really awesome news!

I can't wait to see it. This is one of the most awaited things for me.

coolcyber - yes. The first available build external to MS was as basic as it gets, with functions like reply and forward even missing.

Live Hotmail is super fast with me as well, maybe you need a faster internet connect?

Well, also on the Microsoft Office Outlook Connecter download page, there is this under Overview:

"With a paid subscription, Outlook Connector enables these additional features:

Manage, share, and synchronize your Windows Live Calendar in Outlook. Access your Tasks and Notes."

But if this is accurate, will it mean that only for paid subscriptions will people be able to view their calendar in Outlook?

Chris wrote re: Windows Live Calendar dogfood running - Get ready for a beta

Yes you currently need a Premium subscription to get Calendar synch in Outlook. Its too early to tell whether that will change with WL Calendar.

Yeah, I know, but in the Overview, it refers to "Windows Live Calendar," not MSN Calendar. Look: (www.microsoft.com/.../details.aspx)
