Windows Live Calendars Is Now Out! [Updated - almost there but not quite yet]

After what seems like ages, Windows Live Calendar is finally out there. Update: almost out there.  Windows Live Calendar was indeed up for a bit, for testing, and will be going live in a public beta VERY very soon, but it's not up yet.  Take the weekend off from pounding the site, everyone :).  You can learn more about Windows Live Calendar here. (edit by kip: 8pm pdt Friday 11/2)

Expect to see more from us over the coming days, but in the meantime, go check it out: http://calendar.live.com. (Thanks for all the tips we got about this. And remember, if you ever want to send us a tip, its tips@liveside.net).

Update 2: We've posted a first look at Windows Live Calendar here.

I keep getting connection errors, but it could be just that I am using it at a crappy internet kiosk.

It looks pretty cool. The real test will be to see how it measures up to Google Calendar.

Wow.. it's actually really snappy and swift..... At first glance it's nice, given that you can import items from Vista Calendar... though I would much rather have them syncd.... I sense a Windows Live Calendar desktop app coming soon....

The first thing I did was use my scroll wheel, only to see that it scrolls through the dates. That's pretty cool, but will take some getting used to for sure!

My biggest disappointment is that it doesn't carry over information from the old calendar.

Has anyone else noticed that the help section specifically mentions that syncing between Outlook and this calendar is not supported?  They are kidding right?  That is like 10 steps back...that is ridiculous.  How can a company who produces a mobile calendar office app, a desktop app and a web app not have seemless syncing between all? I was really looking forward to this.

What would be earth shattering would be if they included OTA Calendar Syncing with the Windows Mobile/Nokia Live Client.

That is the one thing I am missing,  Calendar sync with my mobile phone.

ok, so the Private Calendar sharing is interesting.  Once you turn it on, you can add the ICS links to Windows Calendar, or export the ICS files for other apps.  It's a one way READ though, as all edits have to happen on the web site.

There is also XML to publish a calendar via RSS, or HTML I guess if you wanted to send someone an offline copy.

I do like the multple calendar overlays.  I would like to see some Event Category suport (Birthday, Dinner, Kids, etc.)

I think we should wait for it to come out of beta, before making hasty assumptions.

I think the syncing with other offerings will work out in the end.

Damn, it's down again. It looks so cool. It would be helpful if there was an activeX that let reminders from it pop up.

Phunky afaik it should carry over information from your MSN Calendar. Give it a try when its launched properly and that should happen.

Very minimalistic.

Needs outlook access like the old calendar.

needs old calendar items in it.

I'm thrilled its finally out (kind of)!

I got signed up last night and its working for me.  Yes, its somewhat limited now, but this is the very beginning of a beta so I'm sure after some time it will be fully functional with other software.

I'm sure there will be a "Windows Live Calendar" app soon because when you click "sign up for the Windows Live Calendar beta" it takes you to Windows Live's software download page.

I am so hyped!  With this and the upcomming "Office Live Workspace"  I'll be able to move away from Google.

Nice to finally see Calendar out.

I've not had any problems since it's "release" Friday, still able to use it today, signing in and out and so forth.  A lot of "disconnect" problems, normal for just being released and probably a large number of people poking around with it.

Don't like the fact that it did not carry over my calendar entries from MSN Calender to Live Calender.  It's still not linked properly from Hotmail, or from the Orb menu, have to go directly to Calender.live.com at this time.  Disappointed they only are offering one print view, agenda style.  And would like to see events description visible in the block  in week view.  it's visible in the mouseover, but *more* helpful if it's visible in the block.

LIKE the quick add function, great for when I need to pop something in there quickly.  Would definitely like to see my Uni do a calendar that I could subscribe to

Can't wait to see what more they will do with Live Calendar.  All in all....a huge step forward for Calendar!

(Disclaimer--I haven't actually used it myself yet, I'm just basing this off the prerelease info and the screenshot.)

This is a huge step forward from MSN Calendar, but I'm not sure it really betters Google Calendar in any way. We'll just have to wait and see, I guess. But synching should definitely be a huge priority.

I prefer to stay with google calendar, since all my calendar is set there and i get free sms messages on any event thats going to happen on my calendar.

from now till WLCalendar gets this SMS feature, maybe it will be in 2010.

too late Microsoft.... im not interested anymore in your calendar.

hope you enjoy it guys.

@vipwoody

SMS in 2010? Nope with the first release. It uses Windows Live Alerts for reminders. You can have them delivered via SMS and/or email and/or WL Messenger.

I can't seem to find the answer...will live calendars import from Outlook 2007?

briankerri: yes Outlook 2007 uses ICS, so you will be able to import an Outlook 2007 calendar into Windows Live Calendar.  More details here:

www.windowslive-hotmail.com/.../default.aspx

but basically File>Save As> your calendar to the desktop (it will save in .ics format), and then import that file into WL Cal, either as a new calendar or into an existing one, where it will allow you to deal with duplicates

@ViperHockey

Yes but I think in WLCalendar, SMS is only functional in the US.

I am not a US citizen, so that's why Google Calendar is better for me since it covers all the world with its SMS service.
