Microsoft, Yahoo!, the merger and Google - Search

Lots of talk about the Microsoft proposal to Yahoo. Google has made an offer to Yahoo! now too. Looks like the battle over Yahoo! and it's services has begun. Let us take a look at Search.

Search - December 2007 Microsoft Yahoo Google
Searches million/share percentage 1,940/2.9

8,505/12.8

41,345/62.4

  source source source

  SEARCHLIVE

Search: Web, Images, Video, News, Maps, MSN, Academic, Classifieds, Feeds, Spaces, Macros

  SEARCHYAHOO

Search: Web, Images, Video, Local, Shopping, Answers, Audio, Directory, Jobs, News

 SEARCHGOOGLE

Search: Web, Images, Maps, News, Video, Groups, Books, Scholar, Blogs

In this area, does Google really have to be scared about a merger between Microsoft and Yahoo!? Looking at the numbers Microsoft will have to fight really hard to become the number 1, but how about the features? What do you think?

Features aren't everything now, brand awareness and accessiblity are also key factors. Unfortunately this is where Microsoft hasn't been performing.

Google made an offer too?! That's just selfish.

Just to clarify, Google has not made an offer to buy Yahoo!, hower Eric Schmidt did call Jerry Yang to offer to help Yahoo! thwart Microsoft's offer:

I think Live Image search better than googles image search

PS: Even live search is 90% accurate for me.

Live Search is fine for the most part. There's only a few times where I've tried Live Searching for something, but the right results didn't show up at all. Though they did on Google. Maybe Live Search could use more users to get the algorithm right.

I also wished Microsoft would do something revolutionary with search. Just simply offering a good search engine won't do. There has to be a reason why anyone should definitely drop Google Search in favor for Live Search.

It's not hard, imagining up search features of the future, and implementing them NOW.
