A new logo for Windows Live Groups?

A few days ago we found the logo for Live Mesh, today our friends over at LiveSino found a new logo for the long-delayed Windows Live Groups. Here's what it looks like:

groups_96x96_72

It seems like Microsoft has changed the logo since the last time Live Search cached the internal page back in October 2007. For those of you who don't remember, the page looked like this:

Windows_Live_Groups

Additionally the subdomain http://group.live.com is now active and redirects to http://home.services.spaces.live.com/groups, but currently the page is just the same as the usual Windows Live Spaces homepage. Seems like the launch of Windows Live Groups will be coming real soon.

Wow. This logo really looks similar to the Ubuntu logo. Much more than the Live Spaces logo.

What's the niche that Live Groups fills, that Spaces and Events don't cover? I'm confussed, so I'll stick to facebook.

@foaf : Are you kidding? Spaces and Events are exclusive to friends/contacts only.

Groups allow multiple users to post up media, ideas, or whatever associated to the thing they like, and you're just associated with the group, not necessarily every member.

Plus Groups isn't just limited to the Spaces implementation...

"Spaces and Events are exclusive to friends/contacts only"

Not true. I've organised Live Events and invited people that don't even have a Live ID, let alone exist in my contacts.

What do you know that the rest of us don't? :)
