Windows Live for Windows Mobile (G2) now available from Microsoft

Jason Landridge posted today that a link is available for the first time from Microsoft if you want to install Windows Live for Windows Mobile (known also as "G2"),  on your Windows Mobile 6 device.

Up until now, it depended on what your mobile operator decided to install on your phone.  I'm on T-Mobile, for example, and I've had the G2 functionality on my Shadow all along.  Others (such as AT&T, I'm told) haven't made it available, so that up until now you've been out of luck.

Included in the download are functionality for:

  • Hotmail "push" access (your mail is "pushed" to your phone, you don't have to go get it)
  • Windows Live Contacts synchronization
  • Live Search bar for the home screen
  • One-click photo upload to Windows Live Spaces

What isn't included is Windows Live Messenger.  However if you don't have the Hotmail push access and Windows Live Contacts synch, go get it now, it's great.

Download Windows Live for Windows Mobile from http://wl.windowsmobile.com.

Strange that they didn't include WL Messenger, it's the killer app for mobile devices.

What version number is this? My phone is currently running v.10.6.0030.2100 and does have messenger (which I don't use that much anyways), so if this is a newer verison with some fixes I'd be interested in updating. Thanks.

Interestingly enough - I downloaded this and installed it on my WM5 phone and it works great so far - I am excited the only thing driving me to leave my Samsung i730 behind was the lack of Windows Live Contact sync - I have been looking for that for a while - now that I have it - it gives my machine new life (although I wouldn't mind the threaded SMS coming in WM6.1!)

NUM Lock Problem:

Not sure if it is just me however the application seems to force num-lock on my keyboard.  I downloaded and installed without a problem howver when I try and sign in I can't acces any of the letters on keys that also have a number.

For example, when I type the word 'Justin' I get 'Ju2in' because it seems to prevent the * (s) and t comes out as 2.

There appears to be no option to cycle through T9, numlock, etc...

So far I can't login - how frustrating!

I have an HTC S710 (E650 from Orange Mobile UK).

Anybody else having this problem?

This isn't really the place to ponder this, but wouldn't Windows Live Messenger make the ideal front end for all the communications options in a Windows Mobile?

I mean, if it was the default contact manager, from it you could start a call, SMS, email, IM all in the same program. All convo's would be threaded, so you'd have an entire history of contact with your contacts.

I can only dream, but Windows Live on Windows Mobiles is a step in the right direction, and is my favourite app on my mobile.

The reason they didn't include Messenger is because the carriers probably wanted to make it SMS based instead of IP based so they can charge more.... so until then I'll just cruise on over to XDA-DEVs and get the full version.
