Windows Live Calendar Gets New Wave 3 Look And To Do List

The Windows Live Calendar upgrade announced here has now completed. It now has a new look and the thing that one notices right away is that it now has the Wave 3 header. Wave 3 header? Yea the one with themes!

WLCthemes

Hmm wonder why they call it scenes in Messenger

So themes, but what else? New features? Yes, Windows Live Calendar now has a  To Do List!

WLCtodoAddtodo

If you click on None in the fields behind Due Date you will be presented with a Calendar in one and a timetable in the other. You can set the priority too, choices are High, Normal and Low.

 WLCtodo5

And there’s my To Do list. Pretty cool!

If you have IE8 beta 2, you may want to set it to compatibility view for Windows Live Calendar. I’ve noticed a few problems in standard mode myself, the most notable below.

What it should look like - IE8b2 compatibility mode:

WLCIE8compatmode

What it looks like when not in compatibility mode:

 WLC-IE8firstloadNonCompatM

As you can see it’s all cramped up and the birthdays now changed into a link saying “1 more”. But that’s not all! Go and scroll, you’ll see the Birthdays “disappear”, well from where they should be…this is the result after scrolling a bit:

WLCafterscrollNoncompatIE8Birthd

The birthdays have moved to the first square in the week they should be in, all mashed up at that…can’t tell what it is till you hover over it :(

Did you know: you can manage your calendars with Windows Live Mail

Do the reminders/alerts of the old calnder automatically get imported? i remember last time when i tried upgrading to new calendar (the version before wave 3), it alerted me that none of my previous alerts would be imported...and then i had to stick to the old calendar :-(

The new look is great, can't wait to see what Hotmail looks like.

A few things:

* Is the next upgrade to WLM client going to show the times in month view (Hope so)

* Still cannot subscribe to my webcal:// on calendars.office

* Will the to do list be in the client?

I think you have to update it manual or use if your a MSN Premium customer then use Outlook Connector for Outlook.  This will download you calendar from MSN Calendar and upload it to WL Calendar.

I had some dates on MSN Calendar but i did transfer them manually by re-entering them on WL Calendar.  I know it can be a long process but worth it.

Yeah, I didn't get any issue with IE8 either when I tried it earlier.

About browser compatibility, it finally loads in Safari, but the result is similar to what you posted for IE8 normal mode....with some "occasional" times when it does show normally.

Something that makes me crazy is that It's IMPOSSIBLE to send a schedule to anyone... :(

I don't like the advert above the banner like that.

Seems  odd. I'll have to try it out first though before I can judge.

They need to get rid of the banner for hotmail plus subscribers.

Is there any way to get rid of the Birthdays Calendar, it is pointless for me since I have all my birthdays in a seperate calendar, and it includes people not in my contacts.

As usual, Microsoft's software + services strategy for Windows has me confused.  Does Microsoft plan on integrating Windows Live Calendar with the Windows client app that was introduced with Vista? Is the Calendar client app going to become part of the the Live applications suite (following in the footsteps of Mail and now MovieMaker) before the release of Windows 7?  Is the calender client app going to cease to exist, with it's functionality fully shifted to Windows Live Mail?

Any info/guesses?

More, more, more please.

Skydrive, Hotmail, Photos. Bring it on.

@Brian: I doubt MS are going to integrate windows live with Vista before Windows 7.

From what I've read and heard Windows 7 won't have any of the trivial applications like Windows Mail or Calendar and it will only have a link to the Windows Live.

@Meikle: I really hope they do. The only reason I pay my subscription is to get rid of that banner!

@anyone: does anyone know if MS have an intentions of Scene/Theme persistence accross all the WL products?

Well that's strange. I haven't received the update. The only thing that has been updated in mine this morning was a UK  Holidays Calendar was added, but not the new header or the 'To do' list!  I like to have a to do list as I tend to use that more than any other feature of a calendar. Hmm, wonder why we all haven't got the update?

Sorry everyone, I have just realised that you are all referring to the online one and not the one down on my desktop inside WLM or are you? Can you let me know as the one actually inside WLM looks nothing like the one online!

They've done a really great job with this! I'm very impressed.

The only thing I don't like is the ugly ad banner at the top. It ruins the look of it.

I hope they plan on integrating this into the Hotmail page when it's out of beta!

I like it.  If the new Hotmail is this speedy, I will be very pleased!

I don't like the ad banner positioning though.. seems like the page layout designer kinda forgot about it...

@Alasdair, themes/scenes will eventually be persistent across Windows Live yes.

@technogran, yes we're talking about the online calendar.

I am confused, there doesn't seem to be an option to set a colour (such as red like Windows Live Messenger) :S only stupid themes :S

Please can you tell us if we will be able to set colours (e.g. red) which work with the flair (or even ones that don't)?

I like to keep my software & services consistent tbh...

Chris wrote re: Windows Live Calendar Gets New Wave 3 Look And To Do List

@Calum-r: In the Messenger personalisation options, select "use the default screen" and then select "Use another colour" at the bottom. That'll give you a coloured flair, but only blue looks good at the moment - all the other colours bleach the white out too much.

The to do list is a great addition, but when will they add a to do list to the windows live mail? it only lets you add events.

I really don't like the ad banner up the top us well - ruins the theme I'd say. It'd be better if they placed it vertically along the right edge.

@Alasdair, in addition to what Chris already answered, there is one place where you can already see this working:

Go to Live Calendar Beta and change the theme in the header, then go to http://download.live.com/ and notice it using the same theme you set in WL Calendar :D

Why is the online calendar more colorful and more full-featured than the desktop calendar in Live Mail?
