A note about Hotmail, SkyDrive and Photos storage space

Hotmail and SkyDrive In our previous posts covering the upcoming features in Hotmail and SkyDrive, we seemed to have missed some hints at possible Hotmail and SkyDrive integration. People have been asking for this for a long time, and now it finally seems possible in Wave 3. In the latest Windows Live documentations, it mentioned several details about the storage spaces that are available throughout Windows Live services:

  1. Hotmail's minimum storage space will be 25GB and this will be ever-increasing as required at the end of each month, making it basically unlimited storage (subject to abuse control)
  2. The ability to download e-mail attachments from Hotmail into SkyDrive - allowing these attachments to be shared with others or just kept private in your online folders
  3. SkyDrive's storage space will also be 25GB, as reported previously, in addition to Hotmail's storage space
  4. SkyDrive will allow uploading of up to 1000 new files stored per month - note that this only applies to newly uploaded files during that particular month, so total storage can well exceed 1000 files (it is unsure whether this also applies to Photos and those Hotmail e-mail attachments downloaded into SkyDrive)
  5. Photos will utilize SkyDrive’s 5GB 25GB of storage space for storage of full resolution photos. (However this may be subject to change - at least we certainly hope so. Perhaps someone forgot to update it in the documentations?) Update: From one of the demonstration videos by Brian Hall, it was shown that Photos does have the 25GB of storage shared with SkyDrive, not the previously reported 5GB. Looks like it was a typo in the documentations after all. Thanks to CKurt for pointing it out in the comments!
For many users, these storage spaces should be well enough for us to share files and photos with our family, friends, or colleagues. Although we do hope that Photos can take advantage of the entire 25GB in SkyDrive instead of the reported 5GB. What are your thoughts on this?

I had been vouching for the "single storage space shared by difference services" for a long time, and am glad to see it actually happening with Hotmail + Skydrive.

But there is more to be achieved here! Instead of the current set up, this is the setup i would propose.

SkyDrive being renamed to Windows Live Drive with 25 - 30 GB Storage.

This space should be shared amongst Hotmail, Photos, Space and all the other Windows Live services. So that the individual limitations of each of the services can be done away with, and the user has only a max limit to be vary of!

I guess that the rumors for what was going to be integrated for wave 4 are resulting to be of what may be integrated by january or maybe the integration for wave 4 refers to something else.

What i am hoping for Wave 4  is to get a Advanced Option on Silverlight 2 so we can get video, photo, audio like with the new AOL mail.

There is one Update that truly got me worried. Live Spaces. it must be the best kept under lid. i am going to be shocked if they don`t update it. it is the service that need new features and new look the most. i mean Facebook not got their Multiply riffed and improved design and Myspace got drag and drop profile boxes and profile theme customizer and so on. Wordpress is getting a big revamp in version 3.0 that starts with 2.7 and Blogger is getting better and better integrated while remaining easy and with ample freedom. where is Live Spaces Revamp?.. it needs a dramatic one just like Hotmail.

I love the intergration of Hotmail and skydrive.  I'm not sure if I would ever hit 25GB of email space.  I used to hit the 25MB often about 10 years ago.  I'll be able to take more pictures with my Windows Mobile phone and send it right to skydrive/spaces atleast.  It would probably even better if all of it could sync up with Live Mesh.

I agreed with Liveside about the Phote Storage Limit.  When I first heard of skydrive was giving 5GB of storage, I had about 6GB of pictures.  I have alittle over 14GB of pictures now so when I heard rumors of 25GB, I got excited but we were just told about a picture limit so I will hold off again.  Don't get me wrong, some space is better than no space, I'm just one of those "all or nothing" guys.  Hopefully, the next update will be more liberal.

I think having a single storage space for different services is also a great idea, MS should consider.

25GB for e-mail?! You gotta be kidding me. According to the Today page, I only use 1% of my 5GB inbox. I delete e-mails I don't need (such as notification, newsletters, etc.) and rarely have personal messages sent to me (thanks to IM and Facebook). Would be wonderful if I could allocate that to SkyDrive/Photo storage instead.

Will Photos strictly be between contacts and friends, or will it be Flickr-like where you can search for tons of photos, mess around with the APIs, and all those other neat tools? Wish it were the latter.

Also, where's Videos? I'm surprised Microsoft isn't integrating a video-sharing service into Windows Live. MSN Video is pretty sucky, and they should have just turned it over to Windows Live instead.

I also can't help but wonder what this means for Hotmail Plus and MSN Premium users.

@avatar: I so agree with you man! There should be a more fancy Silverlight version for those of who want a bit fancy stuff with their e-mail. And Spaces definitely needs a revamp! I saw a picture of the new Spaces, and it looks almost the same (though wihtout the banner ad). Sigh, they could at least try to make it a better blogging solution you know. I read MS is just going to take the social networking aspect (if you call it that) out.

Full resolution photos? So, no more resizing extra large (as in dimension) photos like what the Photo Module in Spaces did?

That's the main reason why I now use Skydrive for my photos and not Spaces, because Spaces will resize extra large photos to maximum 1600px in width (not sure about height) even if Optimize for Printing in Windows Live Photo Gallery is checked.

@Quirkboy:

It is more than likely that this will do happen in some capacity in a year. i surely hope so.

Have you used the Silverlight AOL Mail?. it is very nice.

one Live Spaces: yes. it seriously needs a update and major one. more because with the new social features and overal integration. it makes more sense to have a strong offering with Live Spaces in order for Windows Live to generate better engagement but also show what you can do with all the services.  after all. profile, photos and people are featured evolved and taken out from Live Spaces. The Most important aspect is to have better layout management, better customization and better advertising management (so you could choose to have the advertising at the top or have it at the sidebar or have a two instead of one at the bottom. )

@avatar: Spaces won't have advertisement anymore, regardless of whether you're a Premium subscriber or not.
