Windows Live Essentials released, more Windows Live news from CES

Hopefully you’ve been following the news from CES, as we’ve been stuck at work (or fast asleep in Europe and the UK, hating the 6:30pm keynote time).  Anyway let’s take a look at what was announced.

Windows Live

Windows Live Essentials is final, and according to information we have, is ready for download at download.live.com.  However I just installed on a couple of machines and it’s the same build number (14.0.8050.1202).  So either we’re just calling 1202 good enough to go, or the new build hasn’t quite made it onto download.live.com yet.  We’re asking around, and will update as soon as we have more info.

Update: Just got word from a Waggener Edstrom spokesperson that yes, ver 14.0.8050.1202 is indeed the final build, so for those of us with the latest beta, no need to try to re-install.

Anyway, Windows Live MovieMaker will remain in beta, but the rest of Essentials is now (or will be sometime very soon) final.

In addition, Facebook has signed on as a Windows Live feed partner, and “in the coming months” you will be able to get content posted on Facebook, including photos, directly in your Windows Live What’s New feed.  Of course this is a major coup for What’s New, as having it tied in to Facebook, who just announced some impressive numbers of their own today, will go a long way toward legitimizing What’s New and Home.Live.com.

And (ahem) One More Thing: Dell will pre-install Windows Live Essentials on all new consumer and small business PCs starting in February.  While this is pretty much a no-brainer for Windows 7 machines (considering they won’t have email etc without some sort of add-in), getting Windows Live Essentials on all new machines from now until the time Windows 7 is available (if I was in Vegas at CES, I would be betting heavily on a summer RTM and availability for back-to-school and holiday sales) is a plus for Windows Live.

Live Search

Dell will also ship “a majority” of new PCs (consumer and small business) with Microsoft’s Live Search installed as the default search provider, again beginning in Feb 2009.

As we reported earlier, Verizon Wireless will offer Live Search as well as search and display advertising to all Verizon Wireless subscribers with phones capable of accessing the mobile web, applying to new Verizon feature phones and smartphones in the first half of 2009.

Live Search for Mobile is also being updated (and this update is available now, at least for me,) at wls.live.com , including location detection (for devices without a GPS), predictive query input, and Bird’s Eye mapping in Live Search for Mobile apps.

Note: You can watch a copy of the keynote, or check out some demos, at the Microsoft CES site: http://www.microsoft.com/presspass/events/ces/

Thanks for the information.

Do you know whether Windows Update will automatically push Windows Live Essentials to users with the older versions, or if WLE must be manually downloaded and installed?

After running the installer, it showed that I already had the products installed. So it still hasn't changed, unless like you said, final versions are what we already had in the last udpate. Somehow I would doubt this though.

The last beta version, 1202, is now the final version.

I'm surprised... considering one of the new features they added still doesn't even work.

That being organizing your contacts by status when in categories display. It still organizes them alphabetically. Shame, that's one thing I really wanted to see fixed.

^^ That's in Messenger by the way!

I've installed messenger but for some reason clicking the mail button wont take me to my hotmail inbox live 8.5 did. I have to sign in manually. If I ask the site to save my details the regardless of what Live ID I'm using I'm always presented with that inbox. I unticked the ask me for my password box, still the same issue. I'm on vista and I've read that for other people this works fine. Any suggestions?

Well I seem to have something even newer than the officially stated build 14.0.8050.1202. My copy of Windows Live Photo Gallery is showing the build number 14.0.8051.1024. While my other apps - Writer, Mail, and Messenger continue to show the build number 14.0.8050.1202. And I think it happened because I installed Photo Gallery after installing Writer, Mail and Messenger. Link for the build number of Photo Gallery: cid-376e88796938f9ec.skydrive.live.com/.../2009-01-08%7C_195553.jpg .

@ravi16aug: It is normal to have build number 14.0.8051.1204 installed for Windows Live Photo Gallery. That is the final (and the previous RC) version. =)

This is ridiculous! There were still noticeaable bugs, for example, where the toasts do not change colour and where every scence (default or user chosen) looks very pixelated when selected.

These are major issues! We cannot use scenes in their current state as they have been so poorly implemented!

It be nice to get an update from the Live team on the status of Live Web Messenger integration into Live Mail.

What is hard for me to believe is that this is the final version and everyone is still having problems. I just figured out on my own why my audio and video set ups were not working for set up with messenger. So this being the final version confirms no return of share folders, changing the colors of your chat windows, creating your own signature sound, the flashing letting you know that your buddy has im you if you are in mute status, and the fix for not being able to do set up with audio and video thru McAfee Security Software. I must say that this is by far the worst beta version I have experienced in my years of dealing with Microsoft when it comes to the messenger upgrade. I am scared for another beta down the line.

It most definitely is the worst so far. It's still full of bugs.

I was expecting Windows Live to be of iLife quality but since Wave 2 the overall quality has degraded. Few new features, more eye candy and lots of bugs. I eventually couldn't resist and made the switch after 12+ years upon seeing iWork 09 and iLife 09 apps. Though I'll definitely keep using Windows quite a lot.

I'm disappointed that they removed the customizable sounds out of WLM. It was one of my favorite features. Also, the title bar used to blend in with your background picture skin, but now it's separate.

I also wish they'd configured the Mail icon on WLM to take you directly to Unread E-mail instead of the Inbox on Windows Live Mail. There's other minor stuff I don't like in the Essentials. Except Writer. Haven't had an issue with it.

Writer still doesn't work properly for Wordpress. It's a shame :(
