Live Search takeaways from CES and more

So there's a bunch of Live Search news that's emerged in the last 24hours, of which the official CES news was the new search deals with Dell and Verizon wireless.

Out today though there are several new stories:

1) Official confirmation that Microsoft is "actively" considering rebranding Live Search, due to Microsoft not making the existing brand "stand for something that consumers have connected to". (Have you Live'd it today?) No comment on the potential rename to Kumo though.

2) Yahoo search deal is still a target for Steve Ballmer, who uses the FT to push his previous deal to shareholders again. Much is being made of the new Online Services head, Qi Lu, and also the fact that Yahoo CEO Jerry Yang is stepping down.

As Kip said in his 2009 search predicitions, the guessing where Live Search is heading is the fun part - let the speculation begin!

Why don't they just forget about search? Move on...

Why does MS feel the need to always copy and repeat what everyone else is doing and has already done?

I would understand if they did that, and made better versions, but they don't. They fail over and over again.

Also there is a red x in your feeds all the time lately. The link to the red x is: feedads.googleadservices.com/.../a

Actually Khristopher, Live Search is very good! (especially the image search). It just needs a rebrand and more market share!

I seriously doubt re-branding search is going to help matters any more and it will probably hurt more than help.

There was enough brand confusion when MS split products off of MSN and created Windows Live.  What are users going to do next?

"I use MSN search.  Oh wait, is it Live Search? Maybe it was I kumo'd the results..."

Rebranding won't do a thing. Whenever I ask someone why they don't use Live Search, they say it doesn't always come out with the results they're looking for, then they'd find on Google or Yahoo. A rebrand would be cool, if it actually looked cooler, integrated more cool web technology in a more cohesive way to make it slick, and the name was actually catchy and not repulsive like Kumo. However, search results are the most important thing, and Live Search hasn't taken any of the feedback I've given. I don't know why they can't crawl some sites right.

The best rebranding for search would be YAHOO! Just for the search engine ("powered by Yahoo")

No need to invest in a new brand. Just make a search deal with Yahoo. Bring the MS search technology (which is good in the US, less good abroad) and take the Y! name.

Maybe if they had the same search for all countries it would be great. www.live.com and www.live.ca look completely different, and it should not. I know all about the laws crap, yet google.ca and google.com look the same, so I think that's a load of crap personally. And if it is somehow important, then they should take are of that crap before releasing it. MS just isn't in the game. They can't seem to do anything right.
