Webcam issues with Messenger stir comments

Last week Windows Live Wire, the Windows Live team blog posted an acknowledgement that “a small number of you are experiencing audio and video problems with your webcam after installing the latest version of Windows Live Messenger”.  According to the post, the problem stems from issues with McAfee Site Advisor, and while McAfee is working on a fix, there is a workaround:

As a workaround, McAfee recommends configuring SiteAdvisor to stop monitoring Live Messenger.

  1. Navigate to the following folder:
    Windows XP/2000/Vista (32-bit): C:\Program Files\McAfee\SiteAdvisor
    Windows Vista (64-bit): C:\Program Files (x86)\McAfee\SiteAdvisor
  2. Right-click on the file sasets.ini and choose Open With, then select Notepad.
  3. Locate the section titled [msnmsgr.exe].
  4. Change Enabled=1 to Enabled=0.
  5. Click File and select Save.
  6. Close sasets.ini and restart your computer for changes to take effect.

However there are some 200 comments on the post, and while a portion of them are, well, less than informative or on topic, a number of others suggest that the issue is more widespread than just a problem with McAfee.  Here’s one typical comment, from “Peter”:

I'd like to know if the Windows Live team plans to accept responsibility for the 0x8AC70013 error rather than blaming it on McAfee. I have been getting after downloading the new version Live Messenger and I don't use McAfee. Also, I would appreciate it if the older version of Live Messenger was made available until the problems are fixed.

Indeed the problem seems to be contained only to the latest version of Messenger, so rolling back to an earlier version fixes the audio and video issues occuring in the latest one.

Are you having issues using a webcam with Messenger?  Are you on McAfee, or not?

I also am getting issues with video/audio conversations.. I notice it sometimes freezes upon accepting the video invite.

I also noticed that people can see that I have a webcam, even though I specifically unchecked the option for 'Allow others to see that I have a webcam"... I find this really weird, because it worked fine in the previous version, but now everyone sees that I have it... which I find annoying.  Why have the option if it doesn't work?

I do NOT have McAfee installed.

I also do not have McAfee and am having problems.  I am running Vista x64 with OneCare.  Although I can make a voice call and show my webcam, I can't make a video call.  When I attempt to connect to a video call, messenger freezes.  I did not have this problem with the previous version of messenger.

I do not have McAfee, and my webcam makes my computer freeze. Sometimes it happens after just 1 minute of having the webcam on, and other times it's after 5 minutes. It's completely random. No error codes are shown. My computer just completely freezes, and I have to press the reset button on my computer.

Also, rather oddly, the Windows Mobile Messenger client has stopped working since they rolled out the new wave (actually, since I first used the beta).  I can view all my contacts but not sign in to Messenger on my WM Phone.

To start with I thought it was just T-Mobile, but after browsing through the XDA Developers forum, it seems to be non-network (and non-device) specific.  And a lot of people are having the same issue.

I can logon to Messenger through the mobile web based interface, but the WM standalone client for WM does not work at all.

WOW! Finally I am being heard since Beta 1 release of Windows Live Messenger. I have been complaining on this board and others since the release of Windows Messenger Beta 1 months and months ago about the webcam not working. Just check the back blogs. I discovered that it was McAfee a while back that caused mine not to work and switched over to Norton and I have not had any problems since.

Yes I can't sign in to messenger with my Windows Live client for S60 on my N95 either but I can still sync my hotmail and contacts.

It says something like "we are sorry but windows live messenger is unavailiable at the moment try again later"

Been like this for about 5 days now.

Liveside, can you guys get some answers?

Yep I get server issues on WL for Windows Mobile.

Like I said, I thought it was T-Mobile, but according to the XNA Developers Forum, it's across multiple networks and handsets....   It doesn't work on WiFi either, so it's def. not the network.

Any ideas??  Liveside?? :P

I have also an issue with webcam in and out. It gives 'connected' but the webcambox stays white. So it doesnt get any image. After a couple of seconds the webcam stops. I don't use McAfee.
