 &lt;p&gt;&lt;/p&gt;  &lt;p&gt;Microsoft has been having some good success with the (US only) &lt;a href="http://im.live.com/Messenger/IM/Home/Default.aspx" target="_blank"&gt;i’m Initiative&lt;/a&gt;, having raised $1.5 million for charities, and at the same time pushing new downloads of Windows Live Messenger (and more recently, Hotmail sign-ups):&lt;/p&gt;  &lt;blockquote&gt;   &lt;p&gt;&lt;b&gt;New customer acquisition&lt;/b&gt;: More than 20 million downloads of Windows Live Messenger have been attributed to the i’m campaign itself.&amp;#160; The i’m Initiative’s expansion to Windows Live Hotmail happened in May 2008; therefore, Hotmail download figures are not yet available.&lt;/p&gt; &lt;/blockquote&gt;  &lt;p&gt;In this new, and 3rd, campaign for the initiative, which makes donations to charities if users include a marker in their Windows Live Messenger user name, plans to follow the fictional attempt by one Parker Whittle &lt;a href="http://imtalkathon.com/" target="_blank"&gt;as he tries to stay awake for 30 days&lt;/a&gt;.&lt;/p&gt;  &lt;p&gt;&lt;a href="http://www.liveside.net/blogs/main/WindowsLiveWriter/NewimInitiativecampaigntobegin30daysofno_FC8B/ParkerWhittle.png"&gt;&lt;img title="ParkerWhittle" height="455" alt="ParkerWhittle" src="http://www.liveside.net/blogs/main/WindowsLiveWriter/NewimInitiativecampaigntobegin30daysofno_FC8B/ParkerWhittle_thumb.png" width="400" border="0" /&gt;&lt;/a&gt; &lt;/p&gt;  &lt;p&gt;“Parker”s Hotmail/Msgr address is &lt;a title="Email or IM me!" href="mailto:im_parker@hotmail.com"&gt;im_parker@hotmail.com&lt;/a&gt;, and he’s apparently quite a Web 2.0 guy, with a &lt;a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/27570017@N06/" target="_blank"&gt;Flickr account&lt;/a&gt;, a &lt;a href="http://www.linkedin.com/pub/8/8b4/b0a" target="_blank"&gt;LinkedIn account&lt;/a&gt;, and he’s even on &lt;a href="http://www.twitter.com/Da_P_Whit" target="_blank"&gt;Twitter&lt;/a&gt; (&lt;a href="http://www.twitter.com/liveside" target="_blank"&gt;so are we&lt;/a&gt;, by the way)&lt;/p&gt;  &lt;p&gt;I talked to Tara Kriese, Senior Product Marketing Manager for Windows Live this morning, about the new campaign&amp;#160; and the i’m Initiative, which has been a success for both Windows Live and for the charities it supports.&amp;#160; The charities are getting a nice steady source of revenue for a demographic that is difficult for them to reach via their normal channels, according to Kriese, and Microsoft gains by having the charities actively encourage the use of Messenger and now Hotmail.&amp;#160; In the 5 months so far over $35,000 has been raised, which is a pretty good total considering that only users in the US are able to raise money. However as each of the&amp;nbsp;ten&amp;nbsp;charities is guaranteed to received $100,000 at the end of the first year, this potentially leaves Microsoft another $900,000 or so to meet (based on the current rates). &lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;So what else is in it for Microsoft that makes it worth paying this much? The gain is not only the brand benefits associated with charity giving, but service benefits too. The effect this charity program has had on the&amp;nbsp;number of US Messenger users since it started is somewhat surprising - up almost 25%. While the release of Windows Live Messenger 8.1 may have contributed in part to this (&lt;a class="" href="http://www.liveside.net/blogs/main/archive/2007/01/29/windows-live-messenger-8-1.aspx" target="_blank"&gt;it was launched at the end of Janary&lt;/a&gt;),&amp;nbsp;the image below compares the Windows Live growth against the average Yahoo!, AIM and AOL growth for the same period, and shows just how good a performance this has been. &lt;/p&gt;

&lt;p&gt;No obvious explanation was available for the April figures, however the growth trend for this month is similar for both Windows Live Messenger and the other IM services. &lt;p class="postentry"&gt;Building on the companies’ long-standing relationship, Microsoft will use &lt;a href="http://www.omniture.com/products/web_analytics"&gt;Omniture Web analytics&lt;/font&gt;&lt;/a&gt; technology to measure the performance of their online promotional activities around the i’m Initiative, giving the company insight into how each of their marketing channels contributes to the success of the program.&lt;/p&gt;

&lt;p&gt;The strongest point&amp;nbsp;of this program is that it&amp;#39;s so easy to participate that it would be foolish not to.&amp;nbsp; Although this program has been known by some since the launch of Windows Live Messenger 8.1, it is new to the general public and today marks the official start of the campaign. Also, according to the &lt;a class="" href="http://im.live.com/Messenger/IM/About/Press/PDFs/imFAQ.pdf"&gt;FaQ&lt;/a&gt;&amp;nbsp;people not living in the United States will not be able to participate.&amp;nbsp; Each charity is guaranteed to recieve at least $100,000 in donations in the first year of the program, with no upper limit.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;The program is already&amp;nbsp;seeing a big response internally on the first day and I&amp;nbsp;hope it grows&amp;nbsp;into a&amp;nbsp;big deal beyond the confines of Redmond.&amp;nbsp; Microsoft has a great history of being a charitable company and it&amp;#39;s good to see that they&amp;#39;re taking another step in the right direction.&lt;/p&gt;
