How about laying off the whole MSN team. New today, MSN Mobile Music Service with DRM. Fantastic, what idiot thought that one up and didn't think about communicating with other sectors of Microsoft. You have the Zune service now, expand, kill off similar services, trim the fat. How can MSN run for so long and make no profit. It's a mess.

It wouldn't be "rumors" if Ballmer had stated E&D was being re-orged ;), but multiple comments on Mini's blog, "tweets" from at least one laid off E&D worker, and confirmation to a colleague from Microsoft spokesmen make the E&D re-organization, and we did classify it as rumor, a pretty solid rumor at that. The info isn't coming from Ballmer's letter at all, granted.

I want to know how people are getting "Entertainment and Devices" from the issued statement by Ballmer that says, "Microsoft will eliminate up to 5,000 jobs in R&D, marketing, sales, finance, legal, HR, and IT over the next 18 months, including 1,400 jobs today."

R&D doesn't necessarily imply E&D, and unless there's something I missed in Ballmer's letter, I think people are jumping the gun on the E&D claim.

The Entertainment and Devices division is likely to modify some product release schedules but that is about it. XBox is fine. I expect Zune to be ported very quickly to Windows Mobile so they can get away from manufacturing their own hardware. Windows Home Server team is fine. Media Center is fine. IPTV has super growth potential outside the U.S. ..so its probably fine.
