On #1, I'm trying to get it working, but when I click on "View by Conversation" but is seems it hasn't any effect.

To add onto #7...

You can also go to the Contacts menu. Then go to "view contacts by" and then choose First and last name.

You can then edit your contacts details to put in their first and last name.

I have this done for all of my contacts and it's so much nicer. Also makes it very very easy for finding exactly who I want on my contact list.
