Woody - every company does it, even if its just done internally. See Search Engine Land's trackback above to see that every major search provider has done this.

DavidK - Sometimes it takes the 2nd or 3rd attempt to get an idea right. New isn't always good :)

Paul - Agreed, I prefer the distinctness of the search results within the UI as opposed to the true "universal search".

hahaha -- its funny. Google got all the hoopla yesterday (gotta give em credit for the right PR moves...equally happy to see Windows Live has an answer)...but I actually like the 'Imagine' Live Search test layout waaaay better. Makes much better use of the available screen real estate and has more interactivity.

I love it! I'd say something critical except that it's about time the search engines started mashing things up like this.

Yahoo did it with Alpha, Google are doing it with Universal, so it's not new, but it's cool.

Google does something, and then you see Micro$oft doing the same thing.

This project was already done with Google called SearchMash www.searchmash.com

Yeah, I've been meaning to ask you about that. I saw a Live ad that led me to that type of search layout. I thought it was really cool. All you need on one page. It does a pretty good job of it too, plus no ads. As already noted, the searching on it always doesn't come up right sometimes. But it's still cool. I hope Windows Live can work some more on universal search. Then I'm quite sure more people will move to the Live platform.

I actually like this pretty much.. although it does seem to return nothing for some searches. Typing my name in to it was amazing though.. My Pictures, My websites... impressive...

Yeah, I noticed that site a little while ago. Last week maybe? Universal search is definitely an interesting direction to be going in. ("...in which to be going"?) For a while we've seen those little boxes at the tops of searches showing Image or News or Maps results or whatever, and Amazon.com's A9 has done that to a much greater degree for a long time.

Naturally, though, Google will get all the press, MS will be labelled a copycat, etc. etc. etc. Oh well. :)
