Actually, before Windows Live, MSN Mobile did allow for sign-up of a new account, although it was exclusively through the Verizon Wireless in the United States. I'm not sure about other countries, however.

Maybe we could use it one day to pay for transactions right from our cellphones.

Your Live ID account can hold money (no Microsoft Points thank you) and you could just somehow scan your cellphone to pay for stuff. Or wirelessly pay on the spot, or whatever you can do to pay from your cellphone ID.

Unless a mobile carrier already does that, which I don't think there are. Well I thought it was a neat idea, and the opportunities seem endless.
