While not big news in itself, this launch is part of Microsoft’s new project to better promote its consumer offerings, which

re: Microsoft launches new Windows Mobile homepage – $200m Free The People project starts

@Ibastie: I know. I just responded to the question in the blog post. I'm also going to give the same feedback to the site.

It looks more up to date, than the other site the looked reminiscent of the early years of 2000. It's good except:

- there's ads. Last time I checked, Visio Toolbox was not a part of Windows Mobile. Why are there ads on a company site? Unless it's related to the product, then that's just stupid and annoying.

- no central Apps Store. The power of WinMo, is the fact that there's tons of applications you can download for it (without Apple butting in what goes or not), and many of them are useful. There is an apps store on the site, but it's hidden near the bottom of "Meet Windows Mobile". You can't buy directly from the site, there's just links to 3 different stores. Not much on screenshots or videos or reviews and ratings. Plus most of them are NOT FREE. You can't even submit applications.

- little focus on the internet side : The internet is what makes young people happy these days. One page shows a few screenshots of PIE saying that it provide "just enough" functionality for mobile browser. Yeah, right. Sorry, but if PIE is all MS has to offer, that sucks.

- no virtual emulation test drive : I would love to explore WinMo, if I didn't have a device. So maybe they could make a faux pretend WinMo device, and I can explore around the UI, and see how the buttons work, etc.

I don't think WinMo 6.1 has what it takes to be a consumer device, not without a little touch from HTC or other phone makers to improve the UI and internet access. WinMo seems more targeted for business, and not fun.

If MS focuses on the internet and multimedia side of mobile, as well as the UI and fluidity, WinMo could be much better.

- Media (pictures/ Music/ videos) hows well WM handles media (if it really does)

- Mobile Internet and Social

It should not be focusing on Mobile Office. even though it might be best of WM, it shouldn't be the first thing put in front of a consumer when they want to learn abt WM

WM7 is going to solve a lot of this and bring silverlight to mobile.. better browing.. etc etc...but cant wait till 1Q09...
