Windows Live Photo Gallery gets new OEM partners, Sync integration, and more

Windows Live Photo Gallery from the Windows Live Essentials suite is getting some upgrades in the upcoming “Release Candidate” release too. Besides the many bug fixes (including the wlcomm.exe crash and 100% CPU usage bug ), we also found out from Brian Hall’s interview that Windows Live Sync (FolderShare) will come installed along with Windows Live Photo Gallery to sync your photo albums across multiple PCs, as long as you sign in with the same Windows Live ID on more than one computer: Perhaps more good news for Microsoft’s Windows Live push is that HP had recently signed up to include Windows

Kumo - A new name for Live Search?

Mary Jo Foley got a great tip last week concerning the possible Live Search rebrand we’ve talked about since this time last year. While the Codename Rome update still went ahead last September, the possible name change was put on hold.

Fast forward one year and Microsoft has failed to acquire Yahoo, and with Live Search Cashback just starting to take off its too early to call it a successful initiative. Does Microsoft want to speed things up, and would a rebrand necessarily achieve this? Kip looked at the branding of Microsoft search several times already, and what’s clear is that while marketing improvements are needed, the product itself still has a way to go, especially in terms of relevance.

While Mary Jo talks about three possible names and her research on them, one possible jumped out straight away to me: Kumo. Apparently meaning either “cloud” or “spider” in Japanese, it wasn’t the literal meaning that got my attention. The giveaway was that the registrar for Kumo.com is CSC Corporate Domains, a company Microsoft has been using increasingly over the past year to pre-register its upcoming product names. Remember that whois I linked in our first post on Windows Live FrameIt? Yes you guessed it, CSC Corporate Domains.

If you spend 20minutes researching further, you’ll see that nearly all major top level domains (TLDs) have been registered or changed owners since March 2008, including .fr, .es, .se, and .co.jp. All of them to anonymous registrants hiding behind the registrars.

The caveat I’ll insert here is that CSC Corporate Domains is used by many corporations to acquire domain names, so it could be any company for any product. However the speed and thoroughness of the acquisitions suggests its not just a small Web 2.0 startup that is looking to launch a product in this space. So if its not Microsoft that is relaunching Live Search as Kumo, then somebody else sure wants to keep their upcoming product secret. But that would be one hell of a coincidence.

Forgot to mention, but all the Live Mesh domains are CSC too (eg mesh.com).

In terms of a well-established brand - it'd be simplest to just call it "Microsoft Search".

There's only a few brands that are well-known and established even for the average non-tech users -such as "MSN", "Windows", and "Office". In the online space, the "MSN" brand is definately still dominating - but they gave up using that brand for search (which makes sense).

So the only option is for them to create a new brand that just makes sense by itself - Microsoft Search. Simple just like "Google Search".

Sort of disgree with you damster?  The search needs its own domain name and branding - www.microsoft.com/search is just long and not memorable (http://www.microsoftsearch.com is equally as uninspiring).

@Alimaggs: Thanks for pointing out. When I wrote that I didn't consider the URL aspect, was thinking more the generic branding aspect. You have a point.

I don't think it needs to verbalized to be popular and good. Plus what would happen with live.com and my.live.com? I think name Live Search is already good enough. If I had to make any names myself, I guess it'd be:

iSearch (isearch.com) or Super Search (ss.com). They both seem pretty catchy, and could be verbalized if it had to.

I don't think the problem is the brand. I think it's just the search engine itself. Most results are spot on, but there's always the few....

I think branding is a huge issue still.  Having Windows Live "tacked" onto the Live.com domain is a mistake - in the days of mySpace and Facebook and Flickr, you need a catchy easy to remember URL and spaces.live.com or home.live.com doesn't cut it.

I like the brand Live Search, and the domain live.com is great (short, easy to remember), but it conflicts with Windows Live.  Splitting the two apart is the only real option.

It was the same back when it was MSN Search - nobody wants to use a portal site to search (too much loading time, too cluttered if all you wanted to do was search, and nobody wants sub domains.... search.google?  Nope), which was why they split off the live branding from MSN to distinguish their services but, oddly, ended up in the same situation but with Windows Live vs. Live Search instead of MSN.

From what I've seen on wave 3 from headers, etc, it looks like we'll finally get a coherent service, tied together with less confusion.  Splitting off the search to its own brand and letting Windows Live take nest at live.com really makes the most sense from a branding point of view.  And search won't suffer as WL and MSN will *obviously* use Kumo as its search engine.

@quikboy, the results issue is something I agree with, however given the progress they've made in the last 2 years I'd think most of the problems will be ironed out in the next 2.

@damaster, look at the success of the Xbox and then consider that Microsoft is never even mentioned in any of the commercials and is hidden away on the packaging. A separate brand can work, they just need to make it work.

Microsoft  need good branding with Search. Live Search doesn't cut it.

It's needs to be catchy, separate from Microsoft, Windows Live. Same goes for all the Live Products. having long winded names is truly awful. Simple and effective is the name of the game.

Kumo works.

Hotmail works

Xbox works

Windows Live Hotmail doesn't work

Windows Live Photo Gallery doesn't work

Windows Live Spaces doesn't work.

Domain names are even worse.

Microsoft need to streamline everything.

Keep Windows Live but use it as an umbrella not a plate to serve them. Windows Live should be branding that keeps the services together but not pushed in your face at every opportunity. It should be almost invisible, only there to help when needed, in the small print or bottom of the page, a single link on the header.

It should not be tied into every little online thing Microsoft is doing. Live Hotmail, no. Hotmail, yes please. Consumers don't need to know, they want simple, effective services across the board and use as many or little as possible.

Shoving Live branding on everything from pages to domain names is the worst thing Microsoft have ever done in the online space. Get rid of it. Make it invisble but still keeping the underlining connectivity. Everybody would be happy and you might actually make some headway.

hehe.. I like "Kumo"... sounds fun.. I can picture people saying "Kumo it!"... but it's gonna be hard for ppl to switch from Google.. lol

I totally agree with Alimaggs saying that live.com conflicts with windows live... i think live.com should be soley for Windows Live (instead of just windowslive.com).. and Kumo.com can be for the search division.
