Microsoft discontinues Windows Live OneCare – offers lightweight alternative for free

Microsoft just announced that it is discontinuing Windows Live OneCare from 2009, replacing it with a free lightweight alternative, codenamed “Morro”.  The new product will be available towards the end of 2009, and provide complete malware protection to consumers, at no cost. This is in contrast to Windows Live Onecare, which currently offers malware protection, backup, online photo backup, multiple machine monitoring and a firewall. However these features come with a price tag of around $30 for 3 machines. Windows Live OneCare subscriptions will stop being sold via retail channels from 30

Wave 3 download links: The story

So our post earlier in the week with all the Wave 3 download g-links may have annoyed a few people. Or more than a few people. But hey, we’re only fulfilling our roles as both fans and bloggers. Translucency versus transparency only gets you so far. And to keep that spirit, here’s how the download links came about:

  • Softies clicked through to us from http://home-beta.live.com
  • We’re sneaky, and started visiting the IP address
  • We found a bunch of photos and the download buttons
  • We right clicked and selected view source
  • We kept checking back until the links went live, and even then we waited for a few days before posting

Hopefully this will now end the “OMGZZZZ lets go on a witch-hunt for the internal leaker” effect we’ve been seeing.  We stick to our manifesto, so our delay in posting is more than you’d get from any other blogger. Courtesy and respect work both ways, and in this current climate of silence, DMCAs and takedowns, the Windows and Windows Live teams don’t earn much of that. Plus, we don’t see Apple, Facebook, HTC or Google keeping many secrets right up until launch. Times have changed, your PR should be evolving with it.

(Full credit to the WL Hotmail PR team for putting up this teaser site we posted about last month, and for this week emailing it around to Hotmail subscribers.)

I’d like to hope this honest post means we don’t get the choke-grip from He-Who-Shall-Not-Be-Named. Unfortunately I think its too late for that.

Do you guys know if Soma is a real MS employee or not?

@jlengomin No, Microsoft is not suing or threatening to sue us.  If we had not complied with their DMCA takedown notice (liveside.net/.../microsoft-dmca-s-us-on-windows-live-wave-3-messenger-info.aspx) on the Messenger screenshots, however, that might be a different story.

Lol.  My college proxy blocks the Shorttext site as Porn/Adult Content even though it isn't.

@yertthedestroyer: Soma is anonymous, however given the stuff he has posted about Win7 its probably a safe bet to say he is an MS employee.

I don't know people have seen this thing in messenger.

Its shown in the dp place when a contact is unknown and not in your contactlist (at least i think so:P):

www.slimshadyplace.nl/.../unknown2.png

or only the "display picture"

But jokes aside, i think you guys do a brillant job you may have part time / full time jobs yet you find time to maintain this site for us Windows Live fans!

This place is truely a One Stop Shop for any WIndows Live related information.

Microsoft can't sue you, they need you.  You make them complete

I agree completely with BV2312! I probably wouldn't be half as interested in Microsoft products, especially Windows Live, if it wasn't for you guys!

@Chris: It was your opinion that I wanted, as it is very hard these days to be absolutely sure about anything... he just strikes me as very odd compared to other anonymous bloggers like MiniMSFT, so I hold my doubts.

Plus he updates less then I do... grumble...

I wouldn't take it to heart you guys, I know it frustrates you when DMCA's are sent, but without you guys, there would be thousands of people out there who are unaware of the functionality of Windows Live. You guys are awesome at what you do, and I for one have this as my #1 place to read when I have time to catch up on Windows Live related material.

Keep it up ;).
