In other words, they're only here because they're playing defense, not offense. Here's a better way of saying it:

-Action: Google "defines" search.

-MS Response: MSN Search

-Action: Late, but what the heck, MSN community tries it.

-MS Response: Awesome!

-Action: Google continues to deliver superior search.

-MS Response: What?! Search is this important?

-Action: Google dominates search.

-MS Response: We got to do something...

-Climax: Google and only Google can be Google. Google now means "search" to the world. [*key]

-MS Response: OK, here's another try: Live Search.

-Action: Live Search is late and no one cares.

-MS Response: But why?

-Action: Google continues to succeed.

-MS Response: Live Search 2.0.

-Probable Resolution: Microsoft massively markets Live Search; only way to create awareness to a "new" and very late product. Marketing is key because no one now cares how amazing Live Search is without knowing what it is. (What this article is trying to say)

Like everyone knows, Microsoft has everything it needs to become a successful business: capital and product. But because it's so late in the game of competition, it's in a position where over delivering with marketing becomes vital.

re: Live Search at a crossroads: Searchification and beyond

Live Search is still so premature.

Live Search isn't anything revolutionary, and people are not going to be interested in switching to something new, unless it's really revolutionary.

There's still lots of search betas (Academics, Books, Feeds, QnA, Video, etc.) and those have to be finished up and delivered.

The Live Search layout could do some fixing. It looks somewhat bland, and it doesn't offer any big features.

The only thing Live Search has going for itself is Instant Answers, which I like quite a lot.

Tafiti also looked promising, but slow, not fast, and good still use some tweaking.

Web ads promoting Live Search are also stale, and do little to show how Live Search is better (if at all).

So Microsoft really just has to give a ton of attention to Live Search, or it won't take off at all. And Google and Y! will continue to dominate.
