What it may mean for Windows Live

Word seems to be filtering out about a move to a more modular core for Windows 7, with additional pieces layered on top. Mary Jo Foley first wrote about it last week , with a hint at what's to come for Windows Live: One of my sources close to Microsoft

re: A modular Windows 7?
I think it'll be like Vista, where everything comes in the Disk, but depending on the license you purchase the corresponding features will be activated/ available for install.

Except for live services with have/need cloud storage everything else would come in the Disk and with the new Mesh Sync framework, if would be easier to go offline and online with your data.

I imagine Dell and whoever would ship the computer with the most recent version of the Live module. I would hope so, anyway.

(I wish new computers shipped with Win Live Photo Gallery & Win Live Mail in place of WPG and WM.)

What I want is to be able to log onto **any** Windows computer with my Win Live ID and have my desktop, documents, favorites, etc. Which I suppose is sort of the point of Live Mesh, but I don't how easy/integrated it'll be.

Alber1960 If they make the ability to download these extras easy enough (Windows Live Messenger was straightforward in Vista), then it won't be a major issue to the consumer. I agree that for those without internet access it could lead to a more disappointing experience, so it'll be interesting to see how MS deals with that scenario.

Or, what about people without Internet access? I know it's a pretty lousy argument, but how are they going to feel when they find out that all they have is a Start menu with Notepad and they have to download several GBs of Windows/Windows Live applications.

You nailed it there, that sounds like an awesome combination.

Then again, they're a pritty amazing company. They go around buying companies like they're in a super market.

I thought most people didn't like having to decide with so many choices.
